US withdraws all B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford after new threats

Five men were arrested last week near RAF Fairford after police found fuel but no explosives in three vans, and they were released on bail while the terrorism investigation continued. A dual British-Iranian man was subsequently arrested and also released on bail. Over the weekend, the United States pulled all 12 B-1 bombers out of Britain and sent them back to U.S. home stations after commanders received more urgent information about an Iran-backed plot, which Iran denies. The rapid withdrawal removes the bomber presence at a key forward base for U.S. strikes on Iran and marks a major escalation in the security response.

U.S. Alito considered retirement as Senate control remains unsettled Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said he thought about retiring after the high court’s last term but decided against it, believing he could still make a valuable contribution. The 76-year-old, the court’s second-oldest justice, said he does not calculate how many more years he will serve. Democrats need a net gain of at least four seats and must defend all their seats to take the Senate in November; a Democratic majority could make a future nomination by President Donald Trump difficult or impossible, leaving the timing of any Alito retirement unresolved.

World Brazilians vote in closely fought Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro election Brazilians voted Sunday, October 4, 2026, to choose between left-leaning incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, and right-wing challenger Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, with nearly 159 million people eligible to vote. Preelection polls suggested either candidate could win outright, but if none of the 12 contenders received more than 50%, the top two would meet in an Oct. 25 runoff; results were expected within hours after polls closed. Voters also chose 27 governors, all 513 lower-house members and 54 senators, while the presidential outcome could shape Brazil’s direction on relations with the US and China, organized crime, the Amazon and democratic sovereignty.

World Houthis claim Riyadh Aramco strike as Yemen campaign escalates The Houthis claimed that missiles and drones struck an Aramco refinery in Riyadh on Saturday, causing fires, although a Saudi-led coalition spokesman called their account misleading; videos verified by The New York Times confirmed a fire at the company’s facility. The attack came as Yemen’s Saudi-backed government announced a campaign to retake Houthi-held territory, with Saudi Arabia pledging full operational support. More than 200 US intelligence and military analysts are helping identify targets, and the US is refueling Saudi patrol aircraft, according to current and former US officials. Houthi advances near Taiz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait increase pressure on Red Sea shipping and raise the risk of wider regional escalation.

Business Schneider Electric nears deal to buy PTC for over $20 billion Schneider Electric is nearing an agreement to acquire US-based engineering software developer PTC Inc. for more than $20 billion, with an announcement possible as soon as Monday, although discussions remain ongoing and no agreement is certain. If completed, the transaction would be Schneider Electric’s largest acquisition and would strengthen its industrial software business by adding PTC tools, including Creo, for designing products, manufacturing plants and engineering processes alongside capabilities gained from Aveva. PTC’s market capitalization was $15.5 billion, making the proposed price a sizeable premium, and the deal would rank among the larger cross-border transactions of 2026.

Senate polls showing Democratic gains in Republican states capped a week of domestic strain over inflation, gas prices and mortgage rates. Scrutiny of Cornell sanctions, a halted Tennessee execution and an oil liability case added institutional pressure.

Cornell punishments face scrutiny over campus sexual assault response Discipline summaries obtained by The New York Times show that Cornell expelled two of seven Chi Phi members accused of sexually assaulting Jane Doe and imposed lighter penalties on five others after a Title IX panel reviewed the October 2024 incident. Matthew Ingalls and Jonathan Newell were expelled; Winston Lee was suspended for two years and Gillio Lopes for three semesters; Diego Sarabia, already graduated, was barred from campus for three years; and Scott Norris and Scott Kretzschmar received no-contact orders, training and reflection papers. The panel did not find every accused man responsible for sexual assault, Kretzschmar was found responsible for attempted sexual exploitation, all seven denied wrongdoing and the Chi Phi chapter was banned from campus. The sanctions and Jane Doe's lawsuit have intensified concern about campus safety, prompting Gov. Kathy Hochul to order an independent review and appoint New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor with power to bring criminal charges.

Tennessee prisons chief resigns after botched Christa Pike execution Update Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada is resigning after Wednesday’s botched execution of death-row inmate Christa Pike and will leave this month, Gov. Bill Lee said Saturday. Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital and remained unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator in a Nashville hospital Thursday night; her lawyers said her arms were burned, blistered and swollen. Lee has halted executions for the year and ordered an independent review after a second troubled execution under Strada, this one following the May cancellation of Tony Carruthers’s execution when a required backup IV line could not be established. Strada’s department says it followed protocol, but Pike’s lawyers allege officials showed deliberate indifference, and authorities have not explained what went wrong or whether they will try again.

Democratic Senate gains expand in five Republican states, polls find New York Times/Siena University polls conducted Sept. 22 through Oct. 1 found Democrats leading likely voters in Texas by 6 percentage points and Alaska by 7, ahead in Ohio by 3, tied in Kansas and behind by 1 in Iowa. The findings came as President Donald Trump’s approval weakened amid opposition to the Iran war, high gas prices and frustration over the cost of living; Democrats held a 24-point advantage among independents across the five states. A month before November’s midterms, the shift gives Democrats several paths to retake the Senate, though they must flip four Republican-held seats while holding three battleground states; the state polls carry margins of error of 4.5 to 5.5 points.

Pocketbook pain pressures Trump five weeks before midterms Five weeks before the midterms, Americans are facing worsening pocketbook pain as pay for rank-and-file workers has trailed inflation for five months and borrowing costs have surged. Consumer prices are up over 5% since President Trump took office, with regular gasoline at $4.48 a gallon, up $1.34 from last September, and mortgage rates back above 7%. Consumer sentiment is at the second lowest reading on record while the economy is growing at a 5% pace with unemployment at 4.1%, putting Trump's economic record on the ballot. White House spokesman Kush Desai said spending and retail sales have stayed robust and credited tax cuts, private sector job creation and an investment boom.

Supreme Court tests oil company liability for climate damages On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, the US Supreme Court will hear arguments in a lawsuit by Boulder and Boulder County against ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy over alleged deception about fossil fuels' role in climate change. Filed in 2018, the suit seeks damages for local wildfire, drought, health and infrastructure harm; the 2021 Marshall Fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes and caused an estimated $2 billion in damage. The justices are deciding only whether the state claims may proceed despite the companies' argument that federal law preempts them, not whether the alleged deception occurred. A ruling could shape roughly 60 similar suits with billions potentially at stake; the Trump administration supports the companies, and Justice Samuel Alito's recusal could produce a tie vote.

Australia probes Flydubai co-pilot’s links and possible radicalisation Update Australian authorities are investigating whether the Omani co-pilot accused of attacking a Flydubai captain with a crash axe was radicalised during earlier studies in the country. He studied in Australia from 2015 to 2017 on a student visa issued in 2014, which was cancelled in 2019 after he was no longer enrolled; state police, the AFP and the national security agency are involved in the inquiry. The Financial Times, citing two people familiar with the investigation, reported that he visited radical mosques, browsed extremist websites and had an intelligence file. More than 170 passengers were aboard the 30 September flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it plunged 17,000 feet, passengers overcame the co-pilot and reserve pilots landed in Saudi Arabia; the UAE is investigating motives and links and has called the attack an attempted terrorist act, while Australia says an update will follow.

US boosts Iran pressure with another carrier and up to 10,000 troops The Pentagon is sending another aircraft-carrier strike group and a Marine expeditionary unit to the Middle East, adding 9,000 to 10,000 troops by the end of November and expanding a US force already above 50,000 as President Donald Trump weighs renewed strikes after the Nov. 3 midterms. The USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group departed this week and are expected to join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, potentially raising the region to three carrier groups, though the Washington may leave. The deployment follows Trump’s rejection of a seven-day Iranian ceasefire offer that tied reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resumed nuclear talks to lifting the US port blockade, while Iran has fired ballistic missiles at American warships. Top cabinet officials also met at Camp David on Friday to weigh military options involving Iran and the Saudi-Houthi conflict in Yemen, increasing the risk of wider escalation.

French student protests disrupt schools and strain the government Nationwide student protests over teacher shortages, crowded classrooms and dilapidated schools clashed with police in cities including Paris, Brest, Nantes and Marseille, disrupting more than 700 schools on Friday. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 1,747 people were arrested Friday after almost 2,000 were arrested Thursday; 305 police officers and gendarmes were injured Thursday, while 65 education staff and 170 students were hurt since the protests began. Student unions and several teacher unions called for a third day of nationwide action Tuesday, with the CGT also supporting the demonstrations. The dispute adds pressure as the government proposes €43 billion in spending cuts for 2027 to address one of the eurozone’s largest budget deficits; it dropped a proposal to charge students entering some post-high-school preparatory courses, but student representatives said Friday’s talks produced no concrete measures.

G7 to release 100 million barrels after Trump diesel export threat G7 leaders agreed to coordinate the release of up to 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel through the International Energy Agency, beginning immediately and continuing for four months. The plan includes a substantial diesel release within 20 days and rules out energy export restrictions among G7 members after US President Donald Trump threatened to ban US diesel exports. The move aims to stabilize supplies and shield households and businesses from price shocks, particularly in import-dependent markets such as the UK, where diesel prices have exceeded £2 a litre. The G7 also plans to coordinate refinery maintenance and encourage increased diesel production, but partner contributions remain unclear.

Merz visits Kyiv to pledge more aid amid Russian strikes German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train on Sunday for an unannounced visit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as air raid sirens sounded and Kyiv's mayor said a Russian drone hit the road surface of the Northern Bridge. Merz was accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and executives from Germany's arms industry and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop attacks on civilians and end the war. He was expected to promise about 1 billion euros in additional German military aid plus 350 million euros for energy repairs and plans for joint Ukrainian-German production of interceptor drones and long-range missiles, according to German media reports. The trip underscores continued German support as Russia intensifies strikes on Kyiv's bridges and energy infrastructure ahead of a fifth winter of war and after Moscow warned foreigners to leave the capital.

Steinmeier warns of democratic and unity setbacks on Unity Day President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned in his final German Unity Day address that Germany’s democracy is being challenged anew by right-wing extremism and efforts to erase the memory of Holocaust victims. Speaking in Bremen during official celebrations of the 36th anniversary of reunification, he said hopes for stronger liberal democracy and international cooperation had suffered “bitter setbacks.” He added that preserving social cohesion and national unity will become more demanding as his second term approaches its end in March 2027.

Merz coalition strained as reform dispute escalates before talks Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives are pressing their Social Democratic coalition partners to deliver promised pension and labor market reforms ahead of coalition committee talks next week. CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann said Labor Minister Bärbel Bas must produce legislation so concrete negotiations can begin, while Handelsblatt reported CDU parliamentary leaders were considering withholding support for Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil's income tax reform until that happens. The dispute coincides with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's warning in his German Unity Day speech that Germany risked Weimar-style divisions as up to one-third of voters turn away from fundamental rights after the far-right Alternative for Germany took the largest vote share in two eastern state elections last month.

Study links post-reunification inequality to a new East German identity Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany Elisabeth Kaiser presented studies in Berlin showing that, 36 years after reunification, East Germans still earn less on average, receive smaller pensions and own less property than West Germans, outcomes she links to GDR restrictions on private entrepreneurship and investment. A review of more than 3,000 top positions across 12 sectors found East Germans’ representation rose from 10.9% in 2018 to 12.1% in 2024, remains below 20% across sectors and is absent from the executive ranks of the 100 largest companies and military leadership. Early results from Kaiser’s national Deutschland-Monitor survey found about two-thirds of respondents see wealth, personal connections and social background as crucial to financial and social mobility. Kaiser said the disparities are helping create a more distinct East German identity, warned that politicians’ use of GDR symbols such as Simson mopeds can exploit its emotional power and called for East German representation wherever national decisions are made.

Bond rout pushes 10-year US Treasury yield to highest level since 2002 Update The 10-year US Treasury yield jumped 4 basis points to 5.3338% on Thursday, its highest since April 2002, before easing to about 5.29% as a global bond rout deepened. The 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.6702%, its highest since July 2002, while France’s 10-year yield briefly hit 4.96%, Japan’s reached a three-decade high and Germany’s rose to its highest since 2008. Brent crude rose 2.4% to $100.37 a barrel, intensifying inflation worries as investors focused on fiscal deficits, heavy government borrowing and the Iran war energy shock, while forced selling amplified the volatility. Higher benchmark borrowing costs are affecting mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and companies, and European investment-grade credit spreads widened to almost 0.9 percentage points as traders braced for further swings.

US mortgage rates post four-year jump, squeezing homebuyers The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 7.28% on October 1, up 25 basis points from 7.03% the previous week, the largest weekly increase since October 2022 and the highest rate since November 2023. After dipping below 6% in late February, rates climbed amid a US government bond selloff as the Iran war increased energy costs and inflation fears. The jump is worsening affordability, prompting prospective buyers to delay purchases and weighing on homebuilders amid record-high house prices and high construction costs. Some buyers are turning to adjustable-rate mortgages, with five-year introductory-rate loans averaging 6.56% and accounting for 10.3% of applications, though borrowers face higher payments if rates rise when the loans reset.

Florida’s attorney general asked a court to halt new model development without added safeguards, a public-interest group sued OpenAI, the FTC widened its inquiry and Australia opened a task force. The crisis compounds pressure on Sam Altman as he delays OpenAI’s IPO, cancels a model release and seeks financing that could value the company at $1.4tn.

US federal breaches expose millions of records and espionage risks The Pentagon is notifying more than 2 million current and former military members that hackers accessed a Defense Manpower Data Center system beginning in October 2025, exposing records of 2.8 million living people. Dutch police have arrested a ShinyHunters member, and an FBI cyber official has urged others to surrender. Together, the incidents could rival the 2015 Office of Personnel Management breach, which exposed 22.1 million records, but the Pentagon has not explained how its systems were breached or substantiated its assertion that the data has not been misused.
