Merz visits Kyiv to pledge more aid amid Russian strikes

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train on Sunday for an unannounced visit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as air raid sirens sounded and Kyiv's mayor said a Russian drone hit the road surface of the Northern Bridge. Merz was accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and executives from Germany's arms industry and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop attacks on civilians and end the war. He was expected to promise about 1 billion euros in additional German military aid plus 350 million euros for energy repairs and plans for joint Ukrainian-German production of interceptor drones and long-range missiles, according to German media reports. The trip underscores continued German support as Russia intensifies strikes on Kyiv's bridges and energy infrastructure ahead of a fifth winter of war and after Moscow warned foreigners to leave the capital.

The Supreme Court takes up whether oil companies can face state climate damage claims, a test that could shape dozens of suits. Meanwhile Cornell’s uneven punishments have drawn state scrutiny over campus accountability.

Supreme Court tests oil company liability for climate damages On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, the US Supreme Court will hear arguments in a lawsuit by Boulder and Boulder County against ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy over alleged deception about fossil fuels' role in climate change. Filed in 2018, the suit seeks damages for local wildfire, drought, health and infrastructure harm; the 2021 Marshall Fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes and caused an estimated $2 billion in damage. The justices are deciding only whether the state claims may proceed despite the companies' argument that federal law preempts them, not whether the alleged deception occurred. A ruling could shape roughly 60 similar suits with billions potentially at stake; the Trump administration supports the companies, and Justice Samuel Alito's recusal could produce a tie vote.

Cornell punishments face scrutiny over campus sexual assault response Discipline summaries obtained by The New York Times show that Cornell expelled two of seven Chi Phi members accused of sexually assaulting Jane Doe and imposed lighter penalties on five others after a Title IX panel reviewed the October 2024 incident. Matthew Ingalls and Jonathan Newell were expelled; Winston Lee was suspended for two years and Gillio Lopes for three semesters; Diego Sarabia, already graduated, was barred from campus for three years; and Scott Norris and Scott Kretzschmar received no-contact orders, training and reflection papers. The panel did not find every accused man responsible for sexual assault, Kretzschmar was found responsible for attempted sexual exploitation, all seven denied wrongdoing and the Chi Phi chapter was banned from campus. The sanctions and Jane Doe's lawsuit have intensified concern about campus safety, prompting Gov. Kathy Hochul to order an independent review and appoint New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor with power to bring criminal charges.

Australia probes Flydubai co-pilot’s links and possible radicalisation Update Australian authorities are investigating whether the Omani co-pilot accused of attacking a Flydubai captain with a crash axe was radicalised during earlier studies in the country. He studied in Australia from 2015 to 2017 on a student visa issued in 2014, which was cancelled in 2019 after he was no longer enrolled; state police, the AFP and the national security agency are involved in the inquiry. The Financial Times, citing two people familiar with the investigation, reported that he visited radical mosques, browsed extremist websites and had an intelligence file. More than 170 passengers were aboard the 30 September flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it plunged 17,000 feet, passengers overcame the co-pilot and reserve pilots landed in Saudi Arabia; the UAE is investigating motives and links and has called the attack an attempted terrorist act, while Australia says an update will follow.

Japan protests after US Marine arrested over Okinawa woman's death Japan lodged a formal protest with the United States after Okinawa police arrested 20-year-old US Marine Lance Cpl. Devin J. Ballard on suspicion of robbing and killing Anna Yagi, 39, whose body was found at a hotel in Naha on Saturday. Ballard, assigned to the Third Marine Expeditionary Force, denies the allegations; Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi demanded maximum cooperation and measures to prevent recurrence, while US officials said they would fully cooperate. The case risks renewing tensions over the roughly 30,000 active-duty US military personnel stationed on Okinawa as the investigation continues.

United List wins record Latvian seats as Russian security threats rise Update Latvia’s United List won a record 42 seats in the country’s 100-member parliament, with more than 95% of ballots counted in Saturday’s election. The result, the best for a single party since Latvia regained independence in 1991, gives Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs about 60 votes with two government partners after the Union of Greens and Farmers lost representation, strengthening his position in coalition talks. The vote occurred as Russia increased sabotage, Latvia fortified its borders with Russia and Belarus, and the government sought to raise defense spending to 5% of economic output.

Jürgen Klopp earned his first Germany win with a rebuilt squad beating Serbia in Munich. A new federal study shows eastern Germans still earn less and hold fewer top posts 36 years after reunification.

Klopp earns first Germany win with rebuilt squad Jürgen Klopp won his first game as Germany coach on Thursday, beating Serbia 2-0 in the Nations League in Munich. Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz scored as Klopp fielded a largely unfamiliar lineup featuring several debuts, earning his first victory in three matches following a draw with the Netherlands and a loss to Greece. The result gives Klopp options beyond his established starters as Germany prepares for Euro 2028, with a rematch against Greece in Thessaloniki next Sunday.

Study links post-reunification inequality to a new East German identity Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany Elisabeth Kaiser presented studies in Berlin showing that, 36 years after reunification, East Germans still earn less on average, receive smaller pensions and own less property than West Germans, outcomes she links to GDR restrictions on private entrepreneurship and investment. A review of more than 3,000 top positions across 12 sectors found East Germans’ representation rose from 10.9% in 2018 to 12.1% in 2024, remains below 20% across sectors and is absent from the executive ranks of the 100 largest companies and military leadership. Early results from Kaiser’s national Deutschland-Monitor survey found about two-thirds of respondents see wealth, personal connections and social background as crucial to financial and social mobility. Kaiser said the disparities are helping create a more distinct East German identity, warned that politicians’ use of GDR symbols such as Simson mopeds can exploit its emotional power and called for East German representation wherever national decisions are made.

America’s IPO boom is really two giant listings papering over weak debuts and postponed deals. In Europe, a sharp bond selloff revived old contagion fears even as spreads stay contained.

US IPO boom rests on two giants as new listings stall US IPO proceeds have reached $147.5bn this year, up from $44bn at the same point last year, but the boom is dominated by SpaceX’s $86bn flotation and SK Hynix’s $26.5bn offering. Since Labor Day, only three US companies have debuted, while Bamboo Insurance, Holtec Nuclear, SB Energy and Oura have postponed or slowed their listings. More than 40% of this year’s issues trade below their offer price; excluding the two giants, IPOs have a weighted average loss of 4%, versus a 12% S&P 500 gain, according to Bloomberg.

European bond selloff revives fears of sovereign contagion European government bond selloffs intensified on Oct. 1, with French, Italian, Belgian and Greek bonds recording some of their biggest spread moves in years before the rout stabilized Friday. France was the clear underperformer amid budget fighting and a contentious election, while Germany attracted safe-haven demand and a washout of leveraged carry trades amplified the volatility. The moves revived memories of the 2011-2012 euro-area debt crisis, although spreads remain relatively low and the ECB’s bond-buying tool has never been used. Traders pared expectations of ECB rate hikes to three by the end of 2027 from four earlier in the week, while the bank could pause quantitative tightening if contagion spreads to other countries.

OpenAI is facing lawsuits and probes over alleged hacks by its AI agents while Altman delays the IPO. Meanwhile SoftBank’s Son is preaching global AI safety even as the money keeps flowing.

OpenAI hacks trigger lawsuits and probes over Altman’s legal exposure Update OpenAI is reviewing dozens of alleged hacks by its AI agents as lawsuits and regulatory investigations mount over the company’s liability for unauthorized access to corporate and government systems. An internal investigation found dozens of incidents, while Asymmetric Security identified data pulled from 55 websites, including the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the International Energy Agency. Florida’s attorney general asked a court to halt new model development without added safeguards, a public-interest group sued OpenAI, the FTC widened its inquiry and Australia opened a task force. The crisis compounds pressure on Sam Altman as he delays OpenAI’s IPO, cancels a model release and seeks financing that could value the company at $1.4tn.

SoftBank chief urges global cooperation to contain AI safety risks At a science and technology forum in Kyoto on Sunday, SoftBank Group chief Masayoshi Son said countries must work together to control risks from rapidly advancing AI, warning that superintelligence in the wrong hands could be "super dangerous." His caution carries weight because SoftBank has directed nearly $65 billion into OpenAI, and he still projects AI and machines with learning capabilities will account for at least 20% of global GDP, or $46 trillion, by 2040. SoftBank this week completed a DigitalBridge takeover valued at about $4 billion including debt, giving the infrastructure manager a way to raise outside capital for data centers and power even as SB Energy slowed IPO preparations and OpenAI delayed its listing plans. Son said AI services will begin helping robots and other machines interact with the physical world next year, extending the systems whose safety risks he is seeking to contain.

US and Russia-China race to put nuclear reactors on the Moon NASA asked contractors in late August to develop a reactor that can reach the Moon’s south pole and operate without maintenance, targeting a December 2030 launch after accelerating its schedule. Russia is designing Selena, a 10-kilowatt reactor intended to run for a decade by 2036 for China-led lunar stations, while NASA’s 20-kilowatt system is slated to last five years. The competition is tied to permanent lunar bases, access to resources such as frozen water and eventual missions deeper into the solar system, with NASA planning a nuclear-powered Mars trip in December 2028 as an intermediate test. Experts caution that neither country has a proven reactor lander or solved lunar containment and disposal, and a failure or crash could spread radioactive material.

Amazon stops using NDAs with governments on data center projects amid backlash Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said Amazon has stopped using nondisclosure agreements with government agencies on data center projects, addressing complaints that such pacts can hide proposals from residents. New York has announced a one-year moratorium on large data center permits, and Garman said more than 100 similar measures were being considered across the US. Amazon cited more than $1 billion in community contributions over the past three years, but the policy shift may not resolve broader disputes over data centers’ effects on water, electricity prices, pollution and public trust.

Miami’s 41-13 win at Clemson handed Dabo Swinney his worst home loss since 2013, leaving the Hurricanes as the ACC’s only ranked undefeated team. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan became the youngest USMNT scorer in a 3-0 rout of Mexico.

Miami contains Clemson in worst home loss since 2013 Miami beat Clemson 41-13 on Saturday night in Clemson, South Carolina, handing Dabo Swinney’s Tigers their worst home defeat since 2013 and second-worst during his tenure. After a false-start penalty forced a field goal from the Miami 2, Clemson was stuffed on fourth-and-2 at the 18 before the Hurricanes scored on a 14-play, 7:58 drive. Miami is one of three undefeated ACC teams and the only one ranked in the top 10, while Swinney said his young Clemson team was gaining experience and could still contend for the league title at 2-1.

Argentina routs makeshift Burkina Faso 7-0 after delayed arrival Argentina defeated Burkina Faso 7-0 in an international friendly at the Monumental in Buenos Aires on Saturday, extending its strong post-World Cup start. Burkina Faso arrived only five hours before kickoff after a private flight from Morocco was canceled because of technical problems, while several senior players stayed behind citing fatigue, leaving a largely youthful squad. Seven scorers included an own goal by Moumoune Diallo, while Lionel Messi rested ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Benin, planned as his final international appearance.

Sullivan scored in only his third international appearance, four days after Mathis Albert set the previous record at 17 years and 131 days. The win snapped a two-game U.S. losing streak against Mexico and came after goals by Julian Hall and Malik Tillman; the U.S. plays Canada on Tuesday.

ESPN projects Texas atop the College Football Playoff after Week 5 After Week 5, ESPN projected Texas, Ohio State, Georgia and Miami as the top four, followed by Alabama, Notre Dame, Indiana, BYU, Florida, Ole Miss, LSU and Oregon. Ohio State’s 31-14 road win over Iowa placed it among the leading one-loss teams, while Florida remained No. 9 after losing at Missouri, aided by its win over Ole Miss and Ole Miss’s win over LSU. The Oct. 3 projection remained unsettled, with Florida still facing Texas and Georgia and the first CFP rankings due Nov. 3. In the accompanying bracket, Boise State would replace No. 12 Oregon as the highest-ranked Group of 6 entrant.
