Flávio Bolsonaro leads Lula, setting up Brazil runoff

Flávio Bolsonaro took a commanding lead in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, securing 47% of the vote with almost all ballots counted against 45.2% for left-wing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The 45-year-old senator, son of jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro, will face Lula in an Oct. 25 runoff after defying polls that favored the incumbent. Because most eliminated candidates represented right-wing parties, analysts see Bolsonaro as the runoff favorite, with his victory heralding a significant rightward shift in Brazil.

The Supreme Court opens its new term facing election disputes, climate damages and fights over immigration, guns and religious rights. Student loan forgiveness delays and a Taiwan spying arrest add pressure beyond the courtroom.

Midterms could bring election disputes to the Supreme Court The Supreme Court begins its new term on Monday with about 60 cases scheduled for argument through late April, while November’s midterms could trigger requests to resolve contested vote counts or certify election results. The justices already blocked the Trump administration’s mail-voting changes and Missouri’s Republican-backed congressional map, and they will consider immigration, climate, gun-control and religious-rights cases. Any ruling in a close congressional contest could affect control of Congress and intensify pressure on the court.

FBI arrests realtor accused of spying on Taiwan leader’s son The FBI arrested Wanying Zhang, a 34-year-old California realtor, at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday before she could board a flight to Shanghai, accusing her of acting as an unregistered agent of China. Federal authorities allege Zhang traveled to Seattle in 2025 to surveil Lai Ting-yu, son of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, filming his home and vehicles and sending photos, videos and license-plate information to Chinese handlers. The case brings the Taiwan-China security rivalry onto US soil; Zhang is scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles on Monday, while China says it is not familiar with the case and rejects the allegation.

Public servants face long waits for student loan forgiveness buybacks The Education Department has roughly 82,000 pending applications for the PSLF Buyback program, which lets qualifying public servants make a lump-sum payment to recover student-loan payments lost during forbearance, but some applicants have waited months or years despite an initial 45-business-day estimate. From May through July 2025, the department received an average of 10,743 applications and processed 2,939 each month as rising volume and staffing cuts slowed its manual reviews. It shifted reviews to loan servicers in July, processed about 2,500 cases in August and saw pending applications fall nearly 7% from April, though delays continued. New repayment-plan restrictions could block newer borrowers, while unresolved applications are leaving some government and nonprofit workers unsure whether to keep paying, change jobs or take on a mortgage.

Supreme Court to hear Boulder case over climate damages Update The Supreme Court will begin its new term with a landmark hearing in a lawsuit by Boulder, Colorado, and Boulder County against Suncor Energy and Exxon Mobil. The case asks whether state and local governments can seek billions in damages for climate-related floods, droughts, wildfires and other disasters; the companies and the Trump administration say federal law bars the claims, while Boulder cites longstanding state-law environmental precedents. Eight justices are scheduled to hear the argument after Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. recused, and a 4-4 split would leave the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision allowing the case to proceed standing without national precedent. A ruling expected by late June or early July could doom or advance dozens of similar suits by local and tribal governments.

Spain heads for a snap election on November 29 after housing decrees failed, with polls favoring conservatives. Meanwhile scrutiny deepens over the FlyDubai cockpit attack and Prince Andrew challenges searches of his homes.

Sánchez calls snap election amid Spain housing crisis Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called a snap general election for 29 November 2026 after the People’s Party, Vox and Junts defeated two government decree laws aimed at easing the country’s housing crisis. The minority government’s proposals included pausing evictions of vulnerable tenants until 2030 and introducing automatic lease renewals, following nationwide protests over rents and the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home. Sánchez said he needed a broader progressive majority, while recent polling put the conservative People’s Party ahead and raised the prospect of a far-right party entering government for the first time since the end of the Franco dictatorship.

UAE shared FlyDubai crew list with Israel before cockpit attack Authorities in the United Arab Emirates shared details of FlyDubai Flight 1073 passengers and crew, including nationalities, with Israel before the flight and Israel raised no flags, regional officials said. The Omani co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, 29, then attacked Indian captain Smit Machchhar with the cockpit crash ax on the Israel-bound flight carrying 182 people and tried to seize control before the wounded captain opened the door and passengers subdued him. Hammami had been barred from flying by Oman Air over concerns about extremist views, sent to a deradicalization program and later hired by FlyDubai in February, and as an Omani citizen he should have been barred from the Tel Aviv route under Israeli rules. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a review of security for foreign flights to Israel as the UAE leads an investigation into the attack as terrorism.

Former Prince Andrew seeks to quash warrants for two home searches Former Prince Andrew filed a claim in London’s High Court challenging warrants that authorized February searches of two of his homes, with a hearing scheduled for Thursday. The searches occurred near Windsor Castle and on King Charles III’s Sandringham estate after his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office over allegations that he shared sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the UK’s trade envoy. Thames Valley Police questioned him for 11 hours before releasing him under investigation, leaving him neither charged nor exonerated, and said the investigation was continuing. His arrest marked the first time in nearly four centuries that a senior British royal was placed under arrest.

Klopp's Germany draw with Greece after mixed first internationals Update Jürgen Klopp's Germany drew 0-0 with Greece in Thessaloniki on Sunday, ending their first four internationals with one win, two draws and one defeat. A 2-0 win over Serbia, a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and a 1-0 home loss to Greece leave Germany third in Nations League Group A2 on five points, three behind the Netherlands and Greece on eight. Klopp said the 44-player rotation, including 16 newcomers, showed stronger movement, positioning and collective defending, but Germany visit Serbia on November 13 and host the Netherlands three days later, with wins needed to remain in contention for a top-two finish.

Germany pledges €1bn for Ukraine as Russian attacks intensify Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced €1bn in German military aid during a Sunday visit to Kyiv, including funding for interceptors targeting Russia’s jet-powered drones, plus €350m to repair Ukraine’s energy sector. Company executives accompanying Merz signed 14 agreements worth about €6.6bn covering IRIS-T air-defence missiles, radar and drone-interceptor technology. The commitments came as a Russian drone hit Kyiv’s Northern Bridge and an airstrike on Kharkiv killed one person and injured six, while Merz said supporting Ukraine was also in Europe’s security interest.

Saxony-Anhalt parliament to vote on AfD candidate for president Saxony-Anhalt's state parliament will meet in Magdeburg at 11 a.m. Tuesday to elect its president, with the AfD nominating 35-year-old Tobias Rausch for the formally nonpartisan post. Rausch needs a simple majority, and The Local reported that members of the five-seat BSW had assured their support; the AfD itself holds 39 of the chamber's 83 seats. If elected, Rausch would be the first AfD member to head a German state parliament and the state's second-highest official, a post with significant administrative, procedural and legal powers. The AfD's Saxony-Anhalt chapter is classified as right-wing extremist by Germany's Office for the Protection of the Constitution, while AfD top candidate Ulrich Siegmund aims to seek election as minister-president in December.

Stocks climbed unevenly as softer US data cooled Fed hike bets while oil slipped and bond yields stayed high. In Britain, BT scooped up TalkTalk from administration, keeping 2.5 million customers connected pending review.

Global stocks rise unevenly as oil falls and Fed hike bets ease Global stocks rose unevenly on October 5, 2026, as softer US inflation and employment data reduced expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase and West Texas Intermediate crude fell 1.1% to $90.10 a barrel. The Stoxx Europe 600 gained 0.5%, US stock futures were nearly unchanged, and traders placed an almost 82% probability on the Fed keeping rates steady at its next meeting. Relief remains uneven because the US 10-year Treasury yield held near 5.27% and European political strains left the euro near a 17-month low. Investors are awaiting US services data on Monday and the Fed’s September meeting minutes on Wednesday.

BT buys TalkTalk from administration, protecting 2.5 million customers BT bought TalkTalk’s consumer and wholesale businesses out of administration on Monday, preserving services for about 2.5 million customers after a prolonged sale process failed to find a buyer. The debt-free acquisition is expected to cost BT about £400 million in its current financial year; the loss-making businesses generated approximately £1.2 billion in revenue over the past 12 months. UK ministers intervened because a collapse could disrupt emergency calls, hospitals and medical alarms, while the Competition and Markets Authority must report by October 19 on competition concerns. BT will operate the businesses separately and keep them competing during the review.

Google says some Android apps need tuning on Intel Googlebooks Google acknowledged on October 5, 2026, that some Android apps may not run smoothly on Intel-based Googlebook laptops despite access to the entire Play Store. The company said the vast majority run well, but a small handful of complex apps and games need developer tuning because they were designed for Arm chips; Google has not named the affected apps or quantified the problem. Of the five Googlebooks that went on sale that day, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo models use Intel x86 processors, while Dell and HP models use Qualcomm’s Arm-based Snapdragon chips and should have greater compatibility. Google said it will work with app developers, Intel, and Qualcomm to improve performance and compatibility.

Ubuntu 26.10 beta adds Rust-based encryption and LLM speech-to-text Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.10 “Stonking Stingray” entered beta testing ahead of a scheduled October 15 release, with GNOME 51 and expanded use of Rust. Its stock OpenPGP support now uses the Rust-based Sequoia-PGP, while an optional Myna tool provides LLM-powered speech-to-text with a choice of models. The interim release lets users test Canonical’s more experimental changes, although many will remain on the LTS version until the software and release notes are finalized.
