UAE investigates FlyDubai cockpit attack after Saudi diversion

The UAE is investigating an alleged cockpit attack on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073, which carried 172 passengers and crew from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, before diverting to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and landing safely. The UAE’s attorney general said the co-pilot attacked the captain with a crash axe and tried to seize the Boeing 737 MAX 8; witnesses said passengers and crew subdued him, and the injured captain was later returned to the UAE after being reported stable. Authorities are examining the attacker’s motives, possible extremist ties and a reported security and vetting failure. The incident has also become an Israeli election issue, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising the passengers and opponents accusing his camp of exploiting the rescue.

Tennessee’s prisons chief is out after the botched execution of Christa Pike, as Washington expelled Iranian diplomats and Ohio factory layoffs shadowed a presidential visit. The day reads as institutions under strain and answers in short supply.

Tennessee prisons chief resigns after botched Christa Pike execution Update Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada is resigning after Wednesday’s botched execution of death-row inmate Christa Pike and will leave this month, Gov. Bill Lee said Saturday. Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital and remained unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator in a Nashville hospital Thursday night; her lawyers said her arms were burned, blistered and swollen. Lee has halted executions for the year and ordered an independent review after a second troubled execution under Strada, this one following the May cancellation of Tony Carruthers’s execution when a required backup IV line could not be established. Strada’s department says it followed protocol, but Pike’s lawyers allege officials showed deliberate indifference, and authorities have not explained what went wrong or whether they will try again.

US expels two Iranian diplomats after they ignored departure order The US expelled two members of Iran's delegation to the UN General Assembly after they failed to immediately leave New York. The State Department told Iran's UN mission on Monday to depart, warned it Friday that the two remained in the city, and said one left Friday night and the other Saturday morning. The expulsions deepened tensions as diplomatic efforts to end the war faltered and the risk of renewed combat rose.

Nearly 1,400 laid off at Ohio truck plant before Trump rally Nearly 1,400 workers were laid off Sept. 30 from the former Navistar truck plant in Springfield, Ohio, three days before President Donald Trump was scheduled to speak at a nearby high school. The layoffs amounted to roughly one year of job growth in greater Dayton as former owner International Motors offloaded the facility. Roshel, a Canadian armored-vehicle manufacturer buying the plant, says it will more than double the workforce over the coming years, while laid-off workers expect to be rehired within six to 12 months. The loss came amid voter frustration over inflation, and some laid-off union members said they were planning to campaign for Democrats in the November election.

Latvia’s ruling bloc led parliamentary voting under NATO air cover amid Russian hybrid fears, while Britain bailed terror suspects in the Fairford case and the G7 moved to release oil. Security anxieties shaped the day across continents.

United List leads Latvian election amid Russian security threats Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’s United List led Latvia’s parliamentary election on Saturday, October 3, with an LTV exit poll putting it at 35.6%, potentially the best result for any Latvian party since 1991. Adding New Unity and the National Alliance would give Kulbergs’s bloc 51%, strengthening his position ahead of coalition talks, although a multiparty government remains likely. Nearly 1.56 million people were eligible to elect the 100-member Saeima for a four-year term as NATO reinforced Latvia’s airspace with four German Eurofighter jets because of concerns about Russian hybrid attacks; final results were expected early Sunday.

UK-Iranian dual national released after RAF Fairford terror arrest A 25-year-old UK-Iranian dual national arrested in Westminster on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts connected to the RAF Fairford incident was later released on bail. Searches of two nearby properties ended after five other UK nationals from London, aged 23 to 25, were arrested near three suspicious vehicles early Sunday, prompting a major incident and dozens of evacuations. The five men were released on police bail on Monday as investigators examined possible foreign-state involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran played a part, but Tehran denied involvement, leaving the case unresolved at a base recently used for US strikes on Iran.

G7 to release 100 million barrels after Trump diesel export threat G7 leaders agreed to coordinate the release of up to 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel through the International Energy Agency, beginning immediately and continuing for four months. The plan includes a substantial diesel release within 20 days and rules out energy export restrictions among G7 members after US President Donald Trump threatened to ban US diesel exports. The move aims to stabilize supplies and shield households and businesses from price shocks, particularly in import-dependent markets such as the UK, where diesel prices have exceeded £2 a litre. The G7 also plans to coordinate refinery maintenance and encourage increased diesel production, but partner contributions remain unclear.

Berlin faces a coalition test as conservatives press Social Democrats on pension and labor reforms before committee talks, while President Steinmeier warned of deepening democratic divisions. The week opens with unity under pressure.

Merz coalition strained as reform dispute escalates before talks Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives are pressing their Social Democratic coalition partners to deliver promised pension and labor market reforms ahead of coalition committee talks next week. CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann said Labor Minister Bärbel Bas must produce legislation so concrete negotiations can begin, while Handelsblatt reported CDU parliamentary leaders were considering withholding support for Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil's income tax reform until that happens. The dispute coincides with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's warning in his German Unity Day speech that Germany risked Weimar-style divisions as up to one-third of voters turn away from fundamental rights after the far-right Alternative for Germany took the largest vote share in two eastern state elections last month.

Steinmeier warns of democratic and unity setbacks on Unity Day President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned in his final German Unity Day address that Germany’s democracy is being challenged anew by right-wing extremism and efforts to erase the memory of Holocaust victims. Speaking in Bremen during official celebrations of the 36th anniversary of reunification, he said hopes for stronger liberal democracy and international cooperation had suffered “bitter setbacks.” He added that preserving social cohesion and national unity will become more demanding as his second term approaches its end in March 2027.

Oktoberfest operator gives women free shorts amid upskirting risk Elisabeth Polaczy, operator of Munich’s Teufelsrad amusement ride, has given more than 100 pairs of free cycling shorts to women and girls wearing dresses to reduce the risk of upskirting during this year’s Oktoberfest. A Süddeutsche Zeitung investigation found more than 32,000 videos linked to the ride on Meta platforms, some with millions of views, reviving concern about nonconsensual filming despite Germany’s 2020 upskirting ban. Police have posted warnings at the festival since 2025 and made 10 upskirting arrests in 2025, compared with seven in 2024; a 45-year-old Swiss man was also arrested this year. The festival continues through Sunday.

Tesla expanded its Texas Cybercab fleet despite early Austin stumbles and regulatory questions, while Skydance readied a debt-heavy Paramount-Warner combination promising billions in savings. Ambition is outpacing proof across the market.

Tesla’s Cybercab grows in Texas after a rocky Austin launch Tesla has 169 Cybercabs authorized for commercial service in Texas, up from 45 when the driverless two-seaters debuted in Austin on September 3, after some riders reported lengthy waits, incorrect pickup and drop-off locations, and door or trunk malfunctions. Austin remains Tesla’s only Cybercab city, while an NHTSA audit query and first-responder concerns about the lack of steering wheels and pedals complicate expansion across Texas and into Nevada and Florida. The push matters as Tesla seeks to build a robotaxi business amid pressure on vehicle deliveries and growing competition from Chinese manufacturers. No significant Cybercab collisions have been reported in Austin, but Waymo’s larger Texas operation, with 1,154 authorized vehicles and more than 500,000 paid rides weekly, raises the bar.

Capcom plans AI tools to speed game development Capcom detailed REX, a major improvement project for its proprietary RE Engine that it aims to develop into a “game engine of the AI generation.” Programmer Satoshi Ishida said at a company conference that AI will mainly streamline development workflows and help offset longer production times as games and assets grow larger. The approach fits Capcom’s previous position that it may use AI in graphics, sound and programming but will not include AI-generated content in its games.

OpenAI safety resignation widens scrutiny amid AI consciousness debate OpenAI safety employee David Robinson resigned after three and a half years, saying in an Atlantic essay that the company’s culture was broken and that its trial-and-error deployment approach guarantees periodic failures as AI systems grow more capable. Robinson said he led safety reports for major product launches and cited a breach of Hugging Face systems involving OpenAI agents and other rogue-agent incidents; he urged frontier AI labs to adopt nuclear-plant-style redundancy, careful planning and stronger outside safety incentives. OpenAI said it is strengthening research and testing security, expanding third-party evaluations, monitoring concerning behavior, and pausing training or withholding models when necessary. The departure adds scrutiny of OpenAI’s culture just as CEO Sam Altman called attempts to ascribe religious force to AI or surrender human judgment to it a “real safety issue,” while Axios reported that Anthropic is pursuing moral, potentially conscious models.

Federal judge rules warrantless Flock search violated Fourth Amendment A federal judge ruled that a Tulsa, Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy violated a woman’s Fourth Amendment rights by using Flock Safety to search her license plate without a warrant. Judge Sara Hill said the deputy had no apparent reason for the search beyond the car’s California plate and ordered evidence discovered afterward, including 91 pounds of alleged methamphetamines, suppressed. Although the ruling does not establish binding precedent, it is among the first decisions to describe warrantless Flock searches as indiscriminate mass surveillance. Florida and Texas have said they will stop using the technology, while Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced a bill on Friday that would bar federal agencies from using automated license plate readers.

Court filings allege ICE used Palantir database for protester dossiers Partially unsealed filings in a class-action lawsuit concerning a January ICE operation in Maine allege that Department of Homeland Security agents used Palantir’s Investigative Case Management database to compile dossiers on people accused of observing or protesting ICE agents. The alleged files include photos and license plate numbers; the lawsuit says agents would track or intimidate observers, including by driving by their homes and labeling them “Threat to Law Enforcement, Professional Protestor.” Plaintiffs’ lawyers say the system chills First Amendment rights, while a DHS spokesperson called the lawsuit meritless and denied that a database labeling and tracking domestic terrorists exists.

Florida takes the hit as captain Aleksander Barkov lands on long-term injured reserve after Thursday’s awkward fall against San Jose. On the recruiting trail, guard Taylor Brown picked South Carolina for 2027.

Aleksander Barkov sidelined at least 10 games on long-term IR Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov was placed on long-term injured reserve with a left-leg injury that will keep him out for at least 10 games. Barkov fell awkwardly near the boards during Thursday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks, and an MRI did not reveal the worst-case scenario, though Florida remains optimistic he will not miss the season. The Panthers captain was a key figure in their 2024 and 2025 Stanley Cup championship runs and will continue to be evaluated before Florida plays at the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Taylor Brown commits to South Carolina, filling a point guard need Taylor Brown, the No. 30 overall recruit and No. 5 point guard in the 2027 SC Next 100, committed to South Carolina on Saturday after visiting Columbia in September. The 5-foot-6 Long Island Lutheran guard chose the Gamecocks over Tennessee and North Carolina and is expected to arrive for the 2027-28 season, when she would be their only traditional point guard; she is also rehabilitating a knee injury sustained in February. Brown averaged 12.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists for Exodus NYC last summer and could fill a ball-handling gap South Carolina has acknowledged as it pursues a fourth national championship.
