Anthropic files S-1 for IPO, revealing growth and risks

Anthropic filed its S-1 prospectus for a Nasdaq IPO under the ticker ANT, with a listing planned for next month. The filing shows revenue rose from $4.6bn last year to more than $33bn in the nine months to September, but warns that five customers accounted for 25% of revenue and that growth could stall. It also details over $800bn in compute commitments through 2045 and a governance structure that leaves ordinary shareholders little control, and says its technology may pose 'catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.' Wired reported the filing redacts key figures, including third-quarter financials and lease terms, creating information gaps for investors.

Trump takes a football-star campaign swing to Texas as his coalition erodes; the DOJ hits Comey with a third charge while a judge calls his daughter's firing illegal; USDA bets on chip cards to fight SNAP skimming.

Trump enlists football stars as poll shows coalition eroded President Trump will campaign in Texas with former football stars Johnny Manziel, Colt McCoy, and Danny Amendola in the final week before the midterms. A new CNBC All-America Economic Survey shows his 2024 coalition has weakened: net approval among Latino voters fell from -22 to -38, and among 18- to 34-year-olds from -28 to -53. Voters worry Congress will not do enough to bring down prices, and 44% cite fear that Trump would operate beyond his constitutional power if Republicans win Congress. Lower Republican interest in the election could hurt turnout in tight races.

DOJ charges Comey again as judge rules daughter's firing illegal DOJ charged former FBI Director James Comey for a third time Monday, accusing him of knowingly communicating national defense information to an unauthorized person and conspiring to do so. The complaint came to light hours after a federal judge ruled that the department illegally fired Comey's daughter, Maurene Comey, a former Manhattan federal prosecutor, ordering back pay and her reinstatement if she chooses. The judge wrote that the DOJ invented a new theory of executive power, and the department said it would appeal. Comey also faces a pending indictment over an alleged threat to President Trump after his first case was dismissed.

Trump administration proposes chip-enabled food assistance cards to fight fraud The Trump administration is proposing a rule that would require all states to issue chip-enabled EBT cards for SNAP recipients and require retailers to accept tap-to-pay payments. The USDA says the change would combat card skimming, which has stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from food assistance recipients in recent years. Fewer than a third of states have already made the switch, and chip cards are about 10 times more expensive to produce than magnetic-stripe cards. The public has 60 days to comment before the USDA finalizes the rule, which it estimates would reduce stolen benefits by at least $1.5 billion over the next decade.

Lula won Brazil's runoff but faces a contested result, Israel heads to the polls under the weight of Oct. 7 and its wars, and Machado's return revives Venezuela's opposition. A region in flux.

Lula wins Brazil election as Bolsonaro contests result Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term as Brazil's president, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday's runoff and becoming the first candidate to lose the first round and win the second. Bolsonaro refused to concede and moved to annul the result over a last-minute extension of voting hours. Lula's victory interrupts a wave of right-wing presidential wins across Latin America and preserves a major counterweight to US influence, though nearly half of Brazilian voters backed his opponent.

Israel votes in election shaped by fear and division Update Israelis head to the polls Tuesday in their first parliamentary election since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu facing centrist challenger Gadi Eisenkot. Neither bloc appears likely to win the 61 Knesset seats needed for a majority, so weeks of coalition negotiations may follow. The vote is widely viewed as a referendum on Israel's security failure and its direction amid wars with Iran and in Gaza. The result will also test the influence of US President Donald Trump, who endorsed Netanyahu.

María Corina Machado returns to Venezuela to push for elections Opposition leader María Corina Machado returned to Caracas on Oct. 25 after nearly 11 months abroad, vowing to press for new presidential elections in 2027. A September poll found she would win 61% of the vote against interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who has run the country since Nicolás Maduro was overthrown by U.S. forces in January. Machado plans to campaign across all 23 states, but faces threats from government officials and relies on private security. Her return revives opposition hopes even as questions persist over whether the government will allow a free vote.

Audi's CEO faces criticism in Germany for appearing with Trump to unveil a $4bn US factory, as youth groups expect 130,000 at Saturday protests against austerity and conscription.

Audi boss faces German fury after Trump rally unveils $4bn US factory Audi CEO Gernot Döllner appeared alongside Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Georgia and announced a $4bn investment in the company's first US factory, in Macon, creating 4,500 jobs. The appearance drew sharp condemnation in Germany, where VW works council head Daniela Cavallo and IG Metall chief Christiane Benner accused Döllner of breaching Audi's political neutrality rules and joining a 'propaganda show.' The investment comes as Volkswagen plans to cut up to 100,000 jobs and close German plants, while Audi has faced an estimated €1.2bn annual hit from US tariffs.

Intel moved to buy Classiq for an undisclosed sum, while DWS imposed a 10% cap on redemptions at its flagship property fund, a stark sign of the strain on German open-ended real estate.

Intel to buy Classiq in quantum computing push Intel agreed to acquire Classiq Technologies, an Israeli startup that makes software for testing quantum code across hardware types, for an undisclosed price. Intel said the deal, expected to close in the first half of 2027, will make its quantum computing group a full-stack business. The acquisition builds on Intel's decade-long work on silicon-based spin qubits as it seeks to keep pace in a nascent field drawing interest from large technology companies.

DWS limits flagship property fund redemptions to 10% DWS, Deutsche Bank’s asset manager, said it will honour just 10% of redemption requests at its flagship property fund starting Tuesday, cancelling 90% of each investor’s withdrawals. The €4.3bn Grundbesitz Europa fund has lost more than 10% of its net asset value this year amid an investor exodus from Germany’s open-ended property funds, which have seen almost €18bn in outflows since the start of 2024, according to Bundesbank data. The restrictions, provisionally in place for 12 months, aim to preserve liquidity and avoid fully suspending redemptions; investors can sell shares on the Stuttgart stock exchange at roughly half their official redemption value.
