Trump begins six-day blitz amid 37% approval and weak GOP midterm prospects

President Trump began a six-day campaign swing with two weeks to go before the 2026 midterms, starting in Wichita, Kansas, with stops planned in North Carolina, South Carolina, Iowa, Georgia and Florida before Texas rallies in Lubbock and Waco next week. The Republican National Committee said the trip is intended to shore up vulnerable candidates as Trump's job approval stands at about 37%, a historic low, while tariffs, the war in Iran and higher everyday prices threaten Republican fortunes. White House advisers identify Texas, Ohio, Iowa and Michigan as Senate battlegrounds, say Trump is unlikely to help Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine and have all but given up on picking up a Georgia seat or defending one in North Carolina. The strategy focuses on mobilizing the MAGA base rather than persuading swing voters; Republican strategists call it defensive, and empty sections at a recent Youngstown, Ohio, rally illustrate the turnout challenge.

DOJ charged 28 lawful permanent residents with alleged election crimes in California and arrested 11, putting pre-midterm enforcement at the center of the domestic day. Eric Schmidt's Anthropic stake could also be worth $20 billion at IPO.

DOJ charges 28 noncitizens in California and arrests 11 ahead of midterms The Trump administration’s Justice Department charged 28 lawful permanent residents across California with alleged voter-registration and election crimes on October 19, 2026, took 11 into custody and said arrests were continuing. Prosecutors alleged 21 cast unlawful ballots, while some defendants face felony false-statement and fraudulent-registration charges carrying up to five years in prison. The arrests came as DOJ sued California over its refusal to verify a federal list of more than 20,000 suspected noncitizens, which the government acknowledged may include citizens, and asked a court to set aside their mail-in ballots until citizenship is confirmed; no hearing has been set. California officials called the crackdown voter intimidation and said the 28 defendants represent about 0.0001% of 23.1 million registered voters, while studies have found noncitizen voting rare; DOJ has filed more than 100 cases nationwide since early September.

Eric Schmidt's Anthropic stake could be worth $20 billion at IPO Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt's roughly 1% stake in Anthropic could be worth about $18 billion to $20 billion at the $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion valuation investors have indicated ahead of the AI company's IPO. Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic's 2021 Series A, when the startup was valued at $461 million; at the high end, Bloomberg's wealth index estimates his $57.5 billion fortune would rise by about one-third to nearly $80 billion. Anthropic is set to begin formally marketing its IPO as soon as the week of Nov. 9, with trading expected before the US Thanksgiving holiday and a debut no later than the end of 2026.

A Russian satellite's close, unauthorized approach to a Ukraine-used ICEYE craft is the day's sharpest security signal, though no damage was reported. Tentative Ukraine talks in Norway and Israel's narrowing coalition math add to a wider picture of diplomatic uncertainty.

US officials head to Norway for Ukraine peace talks US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff are set to travel to Norway this week for another round of Ukraine war negotiations, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expected to attend. The talks come amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv, as Zelensky alleges US decisions have slowed military support and Trump accuses him of refusing to negotiate with Russia. The schedule remains tentative, and the White House and Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Russian satellite approaches Ukraine-used ICEYE satellite in close orbit A Russian military satellite, Kosmos 2612, deliberately maneuvered from hundreds of kilometers away to within 500 meters of the US-owned ICEYE-X36 imaging satellite in low Earth orbit, then lingered nearby and moved away. Orbital-intelligence company LeoLabs said the controlled approach and departure were the first known rendezvous between active satellites in low Earth orbit without the other operator's approval. ICEYE-X36 provides radar imagery used by Ukraine, the US military and European defense ministries; no damage was reported, and Kosmos 2612 was moving away at about 10 mph as of Monday.

Israeli frontrunners shun pivotal Arab vote, risking election deadlock With elections less than two weeks away, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and main challenger Gadi Eisenkot are rejecting support from Arab parties even though their blocs are projected at just over 50 seats, short of the 61 needed for a stable coalition. Israeli Arab citizens constitute about a fifth of the population and 17% of eligible voters, and Arab parties are poised to win more than a dozen seats; Arab turnout has historically been 45% to 65%, compared with 73% among Jewish voters. In Rahat, Ra’am and the Joint List are focusing on turnout amid anger over Netanyahu’s policies, including Bedouin home demolitions; higher participation could push one side over the finish line, while a failure to build a stable coalition could leave Netanyahu leading a caretaker government until new elections.

A security fence breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport triggered a major police operation, but the accounts differ: one says the unlicensed 20-year-old was practicing for a driving test; another says he lost control. Airport operations returned to normal.

Novice driver’s fence breach triggers major Leipzig airport security operation Airport staff discovered a broken fence at Leipzig/Halle airport late Saturday, and two men, aged 20 and 32, admitted breaking through it while the 20-year-old practiced for a driving test without a valid license. The men turned themselves in on Sunday evening following the major police operation; police opened an investigation into the learner’s flight, and airport operations returned to normal. The breach revived security concerns weeks after an explosives-laden drone was found near Ukrainian cargo planes, prompting German officials to accuse Russia of planning an attack, which Moscow denied.

Two men surrender after car breaches Leipzig Airport security fence Two men aged 20 and 32 surrendered to German police on Sunday night after a car crashed through a security fence at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz, Germany, where the damage was discovered around 11 p.m. Saturday. The 20-year-old said through a lawyer that he lost control while driving in the airport area, then left and arranged for the car to be towed; he had no driver’s license, and the 32-year-old acknowledged owning the car but gave no further details. Police seized the car and continued investigating, while an initial search found no vehicle or intruder on the airport grounds and the cause of the crash remained unexplained. The breach drew concern after an August explosives-laden drone attack at the airport that German authorities attributed to Russia, a claim Moscow denied.

Tech stocks rebound, but big earnings will test the AI trade The S&P 500 rose 0.41% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.11% on Monday as oversold technology and AI shares rebounded, with chip stocks surging and the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF climbing 4%. The move followed a nearly 2% weekly fall in the S&P 500 and a 4.5% decline in the Nasdaq, and earnings from Meta Platforms, Tesla and SpaceX will test the rebound, with SpaceX reporting after Tuesday's close. Of the 47 S&P 500 companies that have reported third-quarter results, 85% beat estimates and blended earnings growth is on track for 29%, though most technology results remain ahead. Investors want proof that AI companies can deliver earnings growth already reflected in their valuations, while the indexes must hold support to avoid a further breakdown.

Texas data-center permit work continued after Abbott's pause order, even as his office said no permits had been approved. The discrepancy raises oversight questions over power, water and air impacts.

Texas data center permit activity continued after Abbott's pause order Public Citizen and FracTracker Alliance said a review of Texas Commission on Environmental Quality records found the agency continued working on more than a dozen data center permits after Gov. Greg Abbott's Sept. 21 order to pause approvals pending an ERCOT review. TCEQ records show 12 of 14 gas-plant and generator applications were filed in October, eight under expedited review, while the agency issued a Sept. 23 water-quality permit for Abilene and listed stormwater construction approvals in Abilene, Barstow and Royse City. Abbott's office said no permits were approved and no state agency would approve them until ERCOT, the Public Utility Commission and the Water Development Board had the needed information; FracTracker said developers could still prepare sites through notices filed under a generic stormwater permit. With 300 data centers operating, 100 under construction and 200 planned in Texas, the discrepancy raises questions about oversight of associated power, water and air-quality effects, and Abilene residents are set to testify at upcoming gas-plant hearings.

The Mavericks' waiver of Dwight Powell after 12 seasons marks the day's clearest roster reset, while Golden State expects Stephen Curry to be available for its Lakers opener despite an ankle tweak and other injuries.

Mavericks waive Dwight Powell after 12 seasons The Dallas Mavericks waived longtime center Dwight Powell on Monday, likely ending his 12-year run with the franchise. The 35-year-old played 763 of 768 games for Dallas, starting 266 and averaging 6.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 17.5 minutes. Powell joined in December 2014 in a five-player, two-draft-pick deal involving Rajon Rondo, played 11 full seasons in an in-and-out rotation role and was added again shortly before training camp.

Warriors expect Curry to play Lakers opener despite ankle tweak The Golden State Warriors expect Stephen Curry to be available for Wednesday night’s season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers after he tweaked his right ankle during Sunday’s open scrimmage. Curry was a full participant in Monday’s practice and was cleared by the medical staff to continue his preseason ramp-up, with another practice scheduled before the game. Coach Steve Kerr said Curry will practice less to manage his workload and a persistent right knee issue that caused him to miss 27 games last season. The Warriors are also without Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler III, who are recovering from knee injuries, while Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely and Brandin Podziemski is questionable with lower back tightness.

Trey Kaufman-Renn signs with Kansas amid sixth-year eligibility pursuit Former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn signed with Kansas on Monday and is practicing with the Jayhawks while pursuing a sixth year of eligibility. A September temporary restraining order and an October preliminary injunction against the NCAA currently allow him to play, though his case remains unresolved; he argues he would not have used his 2021-22 redshirt under the NCAA’s new five-for-five age-based model. Kansas opened a roster spot after a season-ending injury to freshman Grant Mordini, and Kaufman-Renn is one of three Jayhawks seeking another season of eligibility, alongside Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White. Kaufman-Renn averaged 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds in 2024-25 and 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds last season, and Kansas opens its 2026-27 schedule against Fordham on Nov. 2.
