Saudi Arabia postpones “Davos in the Desert” amid Houthi attacks

Saudi Arabia postponed its flagship Future Investment Initiative conference, known as “Davos in the Desert,” to next year as Houthi attacks threaten the kingdom and pressure Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Houthi strikes on Riyadh’s airport have killed more than a dozen people and disrupted flights this month, while Saudi Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran and a cross-country pipeline have also been hit; the Saudi-led coalition said Tuesday it intercepted a missile bound for the capital. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said RAF Typhoon jets will defend Saudi cities and infrastructure against drones and missiles without conducting offensive strikes, while Britain provides an A400M transport aircraft and military advisers, marking a major expansion of support for Riyadh.

Republicans enter the final two weeks with a shrinking redistricting advantage and little appetite to put Trump on air, while federal voting arrests and Idaho’s abortion-care crisis expose mounting pressure on public institutions. The map is narrowing, confidence included.

Republicans face shrinking map advantage as Trump fades from ads before midterms With two weeks to go before the Nov. 3 midterms, Republicans are entering the final stretch with a shrinking redistricting advantage and limited emphasis on President Trump in their ads. A New York Times analysis found that less than $1 of every $100 spent on Republican House and Senate ads from Sept. 9 through Oct. 17 mentioned Trump, compared with $20 of every $100 for Democrats, as his weak approval rating leads candidates to distance themselves from his agenda even as he asks supporters at rallies to 'pretend I'm on the ballot.' Axios reported that Republicans have spent $133 million on 15 redrawn districts but now privately expect to win seven to 12, while Democrats are positioned to gain five seats in California and one in Utah; in the worst case, the GOP's net gain would be one seat, leaving the House majority in doubt as Republican support has eroded among Latino voters in Texas and Florida.

US charges 28 in California voting cases ahead of midterms Federal agents in California arrested 11 non-citizens on Monday, among 28 green card holders charged with voting-related crimes including fraudulent voter registration and illegally casting ballots. The Justice Department said the arrests support its lawsuit alleging California failed to remove 20,000 suspected non-citizens from state voter rolls, and asked the court to set aside their mail-in ballots until citizenship is verified; no hearing has been scheduled. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the 28 defendants represent about 0.0001% of more than 23 million registered voters and do not show widespread fraud, while state officials disputed the federal list’s accuracy and privacy safeguards.

Idaho abortion ban drives OB-GYN exodus and strains maternity care Idaho’s near-total abortion ban has pushed more than one-third of the state’s OB-GYNs to stop practicing obstetrics, leave Idaho, close their practices or retire since it took effect in August 2022. By December 2025, only 170 obstetricians remained for roughly 1 million women, a 2024 report counted about five maternal-fetal-medicine specialists, half of Idaho’s 44 counties had no practicing obstetrician, and three rural hospitals had closed labor-and-delivery wards since 2023. In the Boise area, patients wait up to six months for a hysterectomy and nine months for an annual exam, while some women with life-threatening complications are flown out of state for care Idaho doctors cannot provide. Voters will decide in November whether to restore abortion rights through fetal viability, though the attorney general is appealing a ruling protecting doctors who terminate pregnancies to protect health and the Republican-controlled Legislature could repeal the measure.

Court records show TikTok executives failed to act on child safety alarms Previously unreported federal court depositions filed in March 2026 show TikTok employees repeatedly escalated child-safety concerns to senior leaders, including then-COO V Pappas, and that executives failed to respond effectively. One internal investigation found children ages 13 to 15 appeared in 112,000 TikTok Live videos in January 2022, while employees testified that TikTok received significant revenue from gifts in rule-violating streams, raising potential money-laundering and child-abuse reporting concerns. Testimony also showed TikTok knew of an 18-plus sign-up loophole, did not alert parents to harmful recommendation rabbit holes, and omitted age questions from a 2018 survey to avoid FTC scrutiny over possible Children's Online Privacy Protection Act violations. The disclosures add pressure as TikTok faces consolidated youth-harm litigation and a Utah lawsuit alleging TikTok Live exposed minors to sexual exploitation; TikTok declined to comment on the records and said its anti-money-laundering program follows international standards.

Zelensky’s Oslo talks with Steve Witkoff seek a more workable path to peace amid a widening US-Ukraine intelligence dispute, while French curfews follow riots that deepen political pressure. Europe’s security concerns and civic strains are converging.

Zelensky arrives in Oslo for talks amid US intelligence dispute Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Oslo on Tuesday for talks with President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, with Jared Kushner joining remotely and Norwegian, Finnish and other European officials attending. Ukrainian military adviser Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov said an absence of reliable US attack warnings was costing Ukrainian lives, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that Washington was deliberately withholding intelligence and acknowledged that Patriot interceptors may not yet have reached Ukraine. The meeting aims to find a more constructive path toward a lasting and just peace, but relations between Kyiv and Washington have soured as Trump calls for a different Ukrainian negotiator and pushes to revive US-Russia diplomacy. Witkoff’s possible next trip to meet Vladimir Putin in Russia was not confirmed, although the Kremlin said it hoped talks could be arranged.

France extends curfews after riots as political pressure builds France extended nighttime curfews on Monday after weekend demonstrations that began over underfunded schools and grew around high prices and declining public services erupted into riots; authorities arrested thousands as shops were looted and a town hall was torched. Germany warned that further riots could not be ruled out, while governments across Europe and Asia, including China, issued fresh cautions for citizens in France and travelers heading there. The unrest came as centrist parties lost ground among young and working-class voters, with Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally leading French presidential polls and major votes due within a year in France, Spain, Italy and Poland.

Kenyan doomsday cult leader Paul Mackenzie convicted of 191 murders A Kenyan court convicted Pastor Paul Mackenzie, leader of the Good News International Church, of murdering 190 children and one adult after ordering followers to fast until they died. Justice Diana Kavedza found that Mackenzie organized the system, targeted children first and used guards to beat followers who tried to escape or eat; more than 400 bodies were exhumed in 2023 from shallow graves at the 800-acre Chakama Ranch in coastal Kilifi County. Mackenzie denied compelling followers to fast. A mitigation hearing is scheduled for Oct. 30, with sentencing set for Nov. 6.

Amazon’s €16 billion German investment arrives as US capital targets Mittelstand manufacturers, raising the question of whether that capital will strengthen Germany’s industrial base or hollow it out. Meanwhile, reform of the eight-hour workday is stalled by coalition disputes.

Amazon to invest over €16 billion in Germany as US buys Mittelstand Amazon said on Tuesday it will invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027, including €4.8 billion to expand Amazon Web Services' Frankfurt cloud region and AI infrastructure, plus logistics projects creating over 3,000 jobs, the Amazon Leo satellite broadband network, new Prime Video productions, and a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin. The pledge, announced at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin, follows a €10 billion investment announced in June 2024 and adds to over €100 billion Amazon says it has invested in the country since 2010. It lands as US capital increasingly targets German industry: US investors were involved in 76 acquisitions worth about $29.5 billion in German industrial and manufacturing companies in 2025, including Madison Air's $5.4 billion purchase of ebm-papst and Bain Capital's 51% stake in Everllence, as aging Mittelstand owners without family successors put firms up for sale. The convergence raises the question of whether growing US investment in cloud, AI and manufacturing will strengthen Germany's industrial base rather than hollow it out.

German coalition dispute stalls reform of eight-hour workday law Germany’s coalition has stalled an overhaul of the Working Hours Act as the conservative CDU/CSU and center-left SPD dispute how far employers may extend shifts. The parties agreed in 2025 to move from the standard eight-hour daily limit to an EU-aligned weekly-hours system, but a June 2026 draft requiring collective-bargaining agreements, health and safety safeguards and electronic hours tracking drew objections from business groups and the CDU/CSU; an early October SPD paper demanded jointly agreed schedules. German law generally allows up to 10 hours with compensatory time off and at least 11 hours between shifts, while sectors including chemicals, refineries, emergency services, health care and security can use 12-hour shifts with works council approval. Chancellor Friedrich Merz favors greater flexibility, but the SPD and trade unions want stronger worker protections, leaving the reform on hold with new labor minister Alexander Schweitzer’s support uncertain.

German suspects face European arrest warrants over Starlink sabotage near Sofia Bulgaria issued European arrest warrants on Monday for two 19-year-old German nationals suspected of setting fire to Starlink antennas near Sofia on the evening of October 9. Prosecutors say three of 18 antennas in a mountainous area south of Sofia were destroyed, two were partially burned and three more were damaged; the suspects entered from Serbia in a car with German license plates and claimed to be tourists. The Sofia case follows four arrests in Germany over an alleged late-September arson at a Starlink station in Poland, which Polish officials believe was orchestrated by Russia and Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an act of hybrid warfare. Ukraine’s military uses Starlink’s military-grade satellite internet service Starshield for battlefield communications, while Bulgaria’s DANS said it was working on the assumption of deliberate sabotage and could not rule out further attacks.

Oil’s move above $110 turns Middle East shipping risk into an immediate price shock just as investors question the returns behind heavy AI spending. Capital is getting less forgiving, whether the bet is hydrocarbons or AI.

AI bubble fears grow as debt risks and investor skepticism rise Investors are growing more skeptical of AI investments as borrowing costs rise, competition intensifies and returns remain uncertain, with 42 AI-related companies accounting for roughly two-thirds of the S&P 500's gains since early 2024. South Korean data-center builder Elice fell 32% to 61,500 won on its Kosdaq debut, below its 90,500-won listing price, while CoreWeave shares have more than halved from their May peak and Nvidia-backed Firmus abandoned a $5 billion Australian IPO. Economists cited in NPR reporting said recessions have historically accelerated job replacement through automation, raising concern that an AI downturn could hurt investors and workers at the same time, though stronger safety nets and taxes on AI investment could limit the damage.

Oil tops $110 amid Middle East tensions and a US fossil-fuel comeback Front-month WTI crude futures jumped 6.58% to about $110.48 a barrel on October 20 as the contract neared expiration, while December Brent crude rose 1.94% to $111.67, its highest level since May. November WTI was on track for a ninth consecutive gain and a nearly 20% monthly increase as attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz escalated; ship tracker Kpler reported at least 18 vessels coming under fire over two weeks, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said two non-compliant tankers were set ablaze after striking naval mines. A new Environmental Defense Fund and Atlas Public Policy report says the share of new US capacity planned for fossil fuels rose from 5% in 2024 to 30% in the second quarter of 2026 and could reach 70% by decade’s end, with 68 gigawatts planned by 2030, as data centers and other electricity demand grow and the Trump administration favors fossil fuels over renewables. The buildout could lock in decades of pollution and higher electricity prices, although utility-scale solar and wind still average $68 to $69 per megawatt-hour versus $90 for combined-cycle natural gas.

Walmart launches joint Sam’s Club membership at $120 a year Walmart on Tuesday launched a joint Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus membership for $120 a year, nearly $100 less than buying the annual plans separately. The plan includes Sam’s Club warehouse access, free delivery from both chains, gas savings, 2% cash back on eligible Sam’s Club purchases and a Peacock or Paramount+ subscription; standalone options remain, with no monthly version. The offer targets shoppers squeezed by high gas and food prices and extends Walmart’s higher-margin membership push as global membership revenue rose 17% in fiscal second quarter. Customers with accounts at both chains can link them, employees will receive the joint membership, and Walmart does not expect related costs to materially affect its fiscal third-quarter or full-year guidance.

Elon Musk’s pledge of one SpaceX share for every American child turns a savings program into a giveaway, but the execution remains undefined. Otter.ai’s $320 million raise is more concrete, though churn and updated revenue were not disclosed.

Musk pledges one SpaceX share for every US child through Trump Accounts Elon Musk pledged on Monday to give one share of SpaceX to every child in the US next year, and President Donald Trump said the shares would be placed in the tax-advantaged Trump Accounts program. At Friday's closing price of $146.03, the pledge for roughly 73 million children would be worth about $10.7 billion; the White House said more than 70 million accounts had been created after 60 million children were automatically enrolled in October. Musk said the giveaway would be the first of many but did not explain how it would be carried out. Using Trump Accounts ties the giveaway to a partisan child-savings initiative, while Michael and Susan Dell, Ray and Barbara Dalio, Brad Gerstner and SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell have also promised contributions.

Otter.ai raises $320 million from General Catalyst for enterprise growth Otter.ai announced Tuesday that it had raised $320 million from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund, which provides capital without diluting equity and earns returns on marketing results. The company plans to use the money for enterprise growth, go-to-market strategy, international expansion and product innovation. Otter.ai said 40 million users have used its service, up from 25 million last year, and that it crossed $100 million in annual recurring revenue last year, but it did not disclose updated revenue, monthly active users or churn. It is testing pre-meeting briefs and a Live Assist feature as it faces growing competition from Fireflies.ai, Granola, Read AI and other meeting tools.

Aaron Boone will manage the Yankees for a 10th season in 2027 despite consecutive ALDS exits, extending a tenure marked by frequent playoff trips but only one World Series appearance. It is continuity with a sizable asterisk.

Aaron Boone returning as Yankees manager for 10th season in 2027 Aaron Boone will return for his 10th season as New York Yankees manager in 2027, with his contract running through next season under a two-year, $10.5 million extension signed in February 2025. The decision comes after the Yankees were eliminated in the American League Division Series for the second straight year. Boone has led the Yankees to eight playoff berths in nine seasons and a .583 winning percentage, but New York has not won a World Series since 2009 and advanced to the Fall Classic only once during his tenure, losing to the Dodgers in 2024.

ESPN backs Vikings, Steelers and unders in early NFL Week 7 picks ESPN analysts backed three wagers for Sunday’s NFL Week 7 slate: the Minnesota Vikings to cover 5.5 points against the Indianapolis Colts, the Pittsburgh Steelers to cover 2.5 points at the New Orleans Saints in Paris, and the Miami Dolphins-New York Jets total under 39.5 points. Minnesota’s case rested on the Brian Flores-coached defense allowing a league-low 12.8 points per game while posting a 67.6% blitz rate, while Pittsburgh benefited from New Orleans allowing 31.7 points per game over its last three contests and 138 rushing yards per game through six weeks. The unders selection followed Miami scoring 13 points or fewer in four of five games and the Jets converting 35% of third downs; the DraftKings lines were subject to change before Sunday.
