Syria weighs sending troops to aid Saudi offensive in Yemen

Syria is considering a Saudi request to provide military assistance for the renewed war against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, with President Ahmed al-Sharaa discussing options during talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Tuesday. The options include defensive support to protect the kingdom from missile and drone attacks or deploying forces alongside Saudi-backed Yemeni troops who launched a ground offensive on Monday to retake territory including Sanaa and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, Axios reported the deployment under discussion could involve 10,000 to 20,000 troops from two Syrian divisions. U.S. officials consulted on the talks do not oppose Syrian involvement, which could bolster less-trained Yemeni forces and deepen Saudi-Syrian ties but risks adding sectarian tensions and inviting retaliation from Iran and its allies while Damascus focuses on recovery from civil war.

Tennessee faces scrutiny after a failed execution left Christa Pike hospitalized, prompting a preservation order, a halt on executions and a resignation. Abroad, Marco Rubio pressed Europe to spend more on defense.

Judge orders Tennessee to preserve evidence after Pike survives execution A Davidson County Chancery Court judge on Oct. 7 ordered Tennessee prison officials to preserve all evidence from the failed Sept. 30 lethal injection of Christa Pike, including logbooks, surveillance footage, equipment, medical records and messages, and to give her lawyers access within two hours of a request. Pike, 50, survived two doses of pentobarbital and after nearly a week unconscious and on a ventilator is conscious and speaking in critical care at a Nashville hospital with a blood clot, pneumonia and severe swelling that prevents her from moving her arms or swallowing. Gov. Bill Lee halted executions through the end of the year and ordered an independent review after the attempt, while state prison chief Frank Strada resigned and any decision on a new execution date rests with the state supreme court.

Rubio urges Europe to raise defense spending in Athens speech Secretary of State Marco Rubio told European allies in Athens on Wednesday that higher defense spending and assertion of national power were needed to sustain Western influence, casting President Trump's America First approach as a model for revival. Speaking on the Pnyx hill to about 250 officials, clergy and military officers during a four-day NATO tour that also included Iceland and Portugal, he said Europe showed signs of revival through rising military spending and industrial production and praised Greece as a model ally while announcing $4 billion in U.S. military sales and a counterterrorism information-sharing program. The appeal comes amid European doubts about long-term U.S. commitment over trade disputes, support for Ukraine, possible troop reductions and the war in Iran.

Russia launched a large missile and drone attack across Ukraine, killing at least 24, as Israel marked the third anniversary of the October 7 attack. Britain pressed to save its East Jerusalem consulate before a closure deadline.

Israel marks third anniversary of 7 October attack Israel held memorial events on Wednesday for the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023 that killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 people taken hostage. Families and survivors gathered at the Nova festival site near Kibbutz Reim, where 378 people were killed and 44 kidnapped, and at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where 64 residents were killed and 19 taken hostage, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced protests demanding an independent inquiry into security failures. The remembrance is shaping political responses as Israel continues near-daily strikes in Gaza, where more than 74,200 people have been killed according to the Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures are seen as reliable by the UN, with more than 1,460 killed since a ceasefire took effect almost a year ago.

Spanish pensioner whose eviction sparked protests dies at 87 Maricarmen Abascal, 87, died on Oct. 7 after her forced eviction on Sept. 23 from her Madrid apartment of more than 70 years, the Madrid Tenants' Union said. She had remained in hospital with severe anxiety and exhaustion since police removed her on a stretcher after her rent was raised from 500 euros to 2,650 euros per month, and she never returned home despite a later eight-year agreement to stay at the prior rent. Her death drew thousands from Puerta del Sol toward parliament, as unions called a nationwide general strike over housing for Nov. 11 and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called an early election for Nov. 29 after parliament rejected emergency housing decrees.

FlyDubai cockpit struggle diverts Dubai-Tel Aviv flight to Saudi Arabia A pilot on a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv stabbed the other pilot in the cockpit in an apparent attempt to crash the plane. The aircraft dropped 17,400 feet in less than two minutes before the wounded captain, identified as Smit Machchhar, fought back with help from passengers and crew to regain control. The flight diverted to Saudi Arabia and passengers later returned safely to Israel, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as averting a major disaster.

Russian missile and drone attack kills at least 24 in Ukraine Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack across Ukraine early Wednesday, killing at least 24 people including four children and wounding at least 98. The assault involved 70 missiles and 130 drones hitting homes, energy infrastructure and businesses, with a cruise missile striking a five-story apartment building in Pryluky killing 18 including an 8-year-old boy and three 1-year-olds. Two more people were killed in Kyiv and four in Kremenchuk and near Oleksandriya, while strikes caused power cuts in several regions. It was the second heavy attack on Ukraine's energy grid in recent days as Russia starts its winter air campaign early while Ukraine faces shortages of air defenses including Patriot interceptors.

UK makes last-ditch bid to save East Jerusalem consulate The UK is making a last-ditch attempt to persuade Israel not to close its consulate in East Jerusalem before a Thursday deadline. Israel said in September it would shut the mission, established in 1838 and separate from the Tel Aviv embassy, which handles UK relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, in retaliation for British sanctions on settlement goods and on firms and individuals supporting settlement expansion. National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell held undisclosed talks in Israel last week without agreement, and Israeli media reported Britain could expel up to 27 Israeli diplomats if the closure proceeds, a move former ambassador Matthew Gould said would seriously damage defence, security and technology cooperation.

Germany blocked Chinese shipper Cosco from acquiring a majority stake in a Hamburg logistics firm over security concerns. The cabinet decision signals Berlin's firmer stance on supply chain resilience and investment screening.

Germany blocks Cosco purchase of Hamburg logistics firm Germany blocked Chinese state-owned shipper Cosco from acquiring an 80 per cent stake in Konrad Zippel Spediteur, a logistics firm operating in the Port of Hamburg. The cabinet-approved decision on Wednesday cited security concerns, with the economy ministry saying the deal would have deepened dependencies and jeopardised German and EU supply chain resilience. The move reflects Berlin's firmer stance toward Beijing under Chancellor Friedrich Merz as it prepares tighter investment screening, three years after a previous government allowed Cosco to take a 24.9 per cent stake in Hamburg's Tollerort container terminal.

Wall Street slipped from records as rising Treasury yields pressured valuations, with the S&P 500 easing. SpaceX credit risk hit a record as plans for $40 billion in debt to buy Nvidia chips rattled investors.

Wall Street falls from records as bond yields climb U.S. stocks pulled back from records on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 slipping 0.2% to 7,801.77, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 341 points to 51,179.87 and the Nasdaq composite falling 0.2% to 27,538.69. The pullback came as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed as high as 5.36% before easing to 5.28% after a $39 billion auction, while investors awaited minutes from the Federal Reserve's September meeting and Brent crude settled at $100.20 amid uncertainty about the war with Iran. Higher yields raise borrowing costs and pressure stock valuations as analysts expect nearly 30% earnings growth, with losses spreading globally including a 1.2% drop for France's CAC 40 and a 2% drop for South Korea's Kospi.

SpaceX credit risk hits record on $40bn Nvidia chip debt plan SpaceX credit risk rose to a record high on Wednesday after plans to raise $40bn in debt to buy Nvidia chips spooked investors. Arizona court orders resentencing over AI victim video An Arizona appeals court upheld the manslaughter conviction of Gabriel Horcasitas but ordered resentencing after finding an AI-generated video of victim Christopher Pelkey carried undue emotional weight. Horcasitas was convicted for the 2021 road rage shooting of Pelkey, and at sentencing Pelkey's sister Stacey Wales played an AI avatar of her brother forgiving his killer, after which the judge said he loved the video and imposed the maximum 10 and a half years. Wales told 404 Media she intended the video to sway the judge, raising questions about how courts should handle AI-generated statements that can influence sentencing through emotional impact.

Baltimore bolstered its battered offensive line by landing Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens from Philadelphia for future picks. He could start as soon as next week while Alabama hopes Josh Ford suits up against Georgia.

Ravens add Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens in Eagles trade The Baltimore Ravens acquired two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens from the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick, with a 2027 seventh-rounder going to Baltimore. The move addresses a depleted center spot after Danny Pinter suffered a season-ending knee injury in August and Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic were placed on injured reserve, leaving rookie Olaivavega Ioane as the fourth starter. Jurgens, 27, is under contract through 2029 and is expected to take over at center as soon as next week, allowing Ioane to move back to right guard.
