German court orders detention of ex-spy chief in treason case

A judge in Karlsruhe ordered pre-trial detention for former BND president August Hanning, 80, a day after his arrest on suspicion of treason and espionage for a foreign intelligence service. Prosecutors allege Hanning paid his former office head Manfred D., 64, for about 2,000 classified documents between 2010 and June 2022 and used the material in private consulting work including an analysis for a foreign intelligence officer, and Manfred D. was also placed under formal arrest. The case threatens Germany's intelligence relationships and national security as the BND conducts a damage assessment and reassures partners while Berlin seeks expanded surveillance powers amid threats from Russia and Iran, and Der Spiegel reported investigators are examining a possible link to Azerbaijan, which Azerbaijan denied.

The NFL wants the Supreme Court to let states police sports prediction markets as gambling, while federal agents say they foiled an ISIS-inspired Mall of America attack planned for Oct 24. Courts and custody will decide what follows.

NFL asks Supreme Court to let states regulate prediction markets The NFL filed an amicus brief supporting New Jersey regulators against Kalshi and urging the Supreme Court to treat sports prediction contracts as gambling regulated by states. The league argued the contracts are not federal swaps under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, citing $1.8 billion in football trading on the season's first Sunday, risks of manipulation involving injuries and officiating, and Kalshi's age limit of 18 versus the state sports betting standard of 21. Federal appeals courts have split on whether state gambling laws can override federal oversight, leaving the court to decide who controls the fast-growing market.

FBI says it stopped teen's ISIS-inspired Mall of America plot Federal authorities arrested 18-year-old Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud on Tuesday in a suburban Minneapolis parking lot after he allegedly tried to buy an AK-47, four magazines and 200 rounds of ammunition for $600 from an undercover agent he believed was with the Islamic State. Charging documents say Mohamud, who was born in the United States to parents from Somalia and had been tracked for two years, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and planned to kill 30 to 60 people at the Mall of America in Bloomington on Oct. 24 during a Hmong arts celebration, citing the 2025 Bondi Beach attack as inspiration. He appeared before a federal magistrate judge Wednesday and was ordered detained pending an Oct. 19 hearing on federal terrorism and weapons charges.

Russian glide bombs killed at least 30 civilians on buses in Kramatorsk as strikes intensify across Ukraine. Israel’s closure of Britain’s Jerusalem consulate and renewed U.S. threats toward Iran deepen a day of widening confrontation.

Russian strike on Kramatorsk buses kills dozens of civilians Russian glide bombs struck two civilian buses in Kramatorsk on Thursday, killing at least 30 people and wounding 18, regional officials said. Authorities halted public transport in Kramatorsk and neighboring Sloviansk amid sharply worsening security. The attack followed a missile strike on an apartment block in Pryluky that killed 22 people including five children, as intensified Russian strikes cause emergency blackouts in Kyiv and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed for more air defenses.

WHO seeks details from Russia on suspected plague death The World Health Organization said Wednesday it still does not know what caused the Oct. 2 death of a lab worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia and has asked Russia for more timely information. WHO epidemic official Maria Van Kerkhove said the agency does not know the causative agent or how the woman was infected, while Russia says she had pneumonia of unknown origin, found no evidence it came from pathogens she worked with, placed about 200 contacts in quarantine and called the situation calm. The information gap matters because unconfirmed reports blamed pneumonic plague, a severe lung form that can spread person to person, raising global concern about transparency, contact monitoring and what comes next.

Trump rejects Iran deal as US reportedly plans massive bombing President Donald Trump said Wednesday he no longer wants a deal with Iran, speaking at a campaign rally in San Antonio. His remarks followed reports that Trump and his national security team have discussed resuming large-scale U.S. military operations in the coming weeks, NBC News reported, with Axios reporting the operation could include massive bombing of Iranian energy, infrastructure and nuclear targets before the midterm elections. The tension comes as Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a record low amid high gasoline and diesel prices, while crude prices remain elevated even as Gulf exports have recovered to about 18.5 million barrels per day, according to Kpler.

Israel orders U.K. consulate closed over West Bank settlement trade ban Israel on Thursday ordered the British Consulate General in Jerusalem closed, requiring the consul general and 19 other diplomats to leave the country, in response to the U.K.’s ban on trade from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. A small diplomatic team will remain in the building, but it will lose its consular designation, ending the U.K.’s nearly 200-year consular presence in Jerusalem. Britain says East Jerusalem is occupied territory and rejects Israel’s authority to close the consulate, underscoring the widening diplomatic rift over settlements.

Germany now expects 1.3 percent growth this year, ending stagnation since 2022 on stronger exports and investment. The outlook is clouded by AfD gains in Saxony Anhalt and Chancellor Merz warning that extremism threatens the social order.

Germany forecasts fastest growth since 2022 at 1.3 percent Germany's government now expects the economy to grow 1.3 percent this year, more than double its April forecast of 0.5 percent, with 1.1 percent growth forecast for 2027. The economics ministry said output expanded strongly in the first six months despite Middle East conflict and higher energy prices, ending stagnation since Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The recovery is driven by exports forecast to rise 3.7 percent and investment up 0.6 percent, while private consumption is expected to rise only 0.3 percent as inflation is forecast at 2.7 percent in 2026 and 3 percent in 2027.

AfD pushes regional vote to end German military aid to Ukraine Germany's Alternative for Germany will introduce a joint motion with the BSW party in Saxony-Anhalt's state parliament next week calling for an end to military support for Ukraine. AfD state leader Ulrich Siegmund, whose party topped last month's Saxony-Anhalt election without winning a governing majority, said the move was meant to press Chancellor Friedrich Merz to seek an end to the war and redirect Ukraine spending at home, while BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht called for renewed dialogue with Moscow. The motion would not change federal foreign policy but adds pressure on Berlin's continued backing for Kyiv days after Merz visited Ukraine and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul held unproductive talks with Russia's Sergei Lavrov.

Merz condemns AfD speaker election as historic break German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said political extremism is threatening Germany's social order after AfD politician Tobias Rausch was elected speaker of Saxony-Anhalt's state parliament, the first far-right politician to lead a statehouse since 1945. Rausch received 48 votes in a secret ballot on Tuesday while the AfD and BSW hold 44 seats between them, prompting speculation that members of Merz's CDU broke the party's firewall against cooperation with the AfD. Merz said anyone who votes for the AfD is playing the extremists' game and acting incompatibly with CDU values, accusing the AfD and BSW of seeking to wipe out the DNA of democracy.

Oil is doing the talking as Brent jumped above $104 on renewed Middle East tension while stocks sagged. Behind it, Fed minutes point to another rate hike this year with inflation stuck well above target.

Fed signals another rate hike likely this year on inflation Minutes released Wednesday from the Federal Reserve's Sept. 15-16 meeting show most officials expect another interest rate increase by year end to combat persistent inflation. The Fed raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point to about 3.9% at that meeting, its first increase in three years, with August inflation at 3.4% overall and 3% on a core basis, well above the 2% target. Officials said inflation risks remain elevated and financial conditions still support growth, while investors now expect the Fed to hold steady at its Oct. 28-29 meeting and hike in December.

OpenAI math proofs signal wider AI disruption beyond mathematics OpenAI on Tuesday released 722 manuscripts organized into 372 families addressing longstanding mathematical problems generated by a powerful unreleased model and invited researchers to examine them. Mathematicians reacted with excitement and unease, with one Rutgers mathematician saying a result connected to the Riemann hypothesis would merit a Fields Medal for a human while others questioned originality and utility. The results matter beyond math because like computer programming, mathematics provides verifiable correctness, suggesting AI advances will keep moving into new fields and reshape expert work as coding tools reshaped software engineering.

Tampa Bay swept the Yankees out of the ALDS after fan interference turned Anthony Volpe’s tying homer into a double in a 4-3 Game 3 loss. Bronx chaos delivered, just not the comeback.

Fan interference costs Yankees tying homer in ALDS loss Fan interference turned Anthony Volpe's would-be tying two-run homer into a run-scoring double in the sixth inning of Game 3 of the American League Division Series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. With George Lombard Jr. on first, Volpe hit a fly to left where Tampa Bay left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. was at the fence when a fan in a Yankees jacket reached over the fence and deflected the ball into the stands. Replay overturned the initial home run ruling after officials determined the ball would not have left the field and would not have been caught, scoring Lombard and leaving Volpe at second with Tampa Bay ahead 4-3. The Rays held that score to sweep the best-of-five series and advance to the AL Championship Series.
