France reels after nationwide protests devolve into riots and looting

The largest demonstrations in France in years, held Saturday to protest the cost of living and school conditions, descended into riots and looting that left more than half a million marchers joined by violent groups and produced about 1,200 arrests. Rioters attacked government buildings in cities from Lille to Marseille, and a nighttime arson fire largely destroyed the 19th-century city hall in Limoges. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu blamed far-left groups and France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who blamed the government and police provocation, while Marine Le Pen and US Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, deepening political divisions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

America's No Kings movement moved from street protest to ballot box Saturday, staging hundreds of rallies to push early voting before Nov. 3, as the Trump administration sued California over mail ballots cast by likely noncitizens.

Unsealed files point to secret informant in O.J. Simpson case A New York Times examination based on newly unsealed court records reports that Joey Ippolito, a mafia associate and friend of Al Cowlings, gave federal prosecutors information about the missing murder weapon in the 1994 Simpson murders while the 1995 trial was underway, though he was never called as a witness. The unsealed 1996 cooperation letter describes Ippolito as an 'extremely reliable' informant who was privy to facts including Simpson's disposal of the weapon, and his brother Sam told the Times that Joey was at the crime scene and returned with a bag and bloody hands, claims Sam later sought to recant. Prosecutors including Marcia Clark said they had no knowledge of him, and former lead detective Tom Lange said he never believed Simpson had help. The LAPD says the case remains an open investigation and that detectives will follow any new leads.

Republican congresswoman warns Trump his immigration policies are alienating Latino voters Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., aired a television ad in front of the White House telling President Trump he had gone "too far" on immigration, saying the Hispanic voters who helped elect him in 2024 feel betrayed. Trump hit back, sharing a post calling her a "back stabber," though Salazar says they later spoke and she stands by her warning. Her Miami-area district, Florida's 27th, is more than 70% Latino, and polling by Equis Research found Hispanic registered voters favoring Democrats over Republicans 57% to 31% for Congress. The race against Democrat Eliott Rodriguez remains "lean Republican" per the Cook Political Report, but GOP worries center on turnout as deportations and cost-of-living concerns eclipse anti-socialism messaging in a community that reliably backed Trump.

No Kings rallies across US push early voting ahead of midterms Hundreds of rallies organized by the No Kings network, which has led protests against President Donald Trump, were held across the US on Saturday to urge voters to cast ballots early before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Events billed as nonpartisan included a gathering of a few hundred people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington and an Atlanta rally where City Councilman Michael Julian Bond told the crowd that voting is their constitutional power. The mobilization push came as the Trump administration sued California to block counting mail-in ballots from people identified as likely noncitizens, and the Justice Department warned local officials who process such ballots risk criminal investigation. The rallies test whether the protest network can convert nearly two years of anti-Trump demonstrations into voter turnout in the midterms.

Elon Musk settles lawsuits over $1 million voter giveaway Elon Musk and his America PAC have agreed to settle two lawsuits filed in Austin, Texas, by Arizona residents who claimed his 2024 $1 million-a-day voter sweepstakes was a fraud, though the settlement terms were undisclosed. The plaintiffs said Musk falsely claimed winners would be chosen randomly, and a representative for America PAC told a judge during a hearing, "The $1 million recipients are not chosen by chance." The lawsuits also accused the PAC of using the petition required to enter as a way to collect personal data with no limits on its use or sale. The settlement leaves unresolved how courts will treat paid voter-incentive programs, a question that could shape precedent for cash payouts in future elections, and Philadelphia's district attorney had separately sued to stop the giveaway as an illegal lottery.

Zelensky publicly called any US tilt toward Moscow a historic mistake as strikes resumed on Russian refineries, while Egypt moved to back Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks. Two escalation fronts are opening at once.

Zelensky confronts Trump over Russia policy as strikes continue President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly challenged President Trump's Russia policy, calling any US tilt toward Moscow a "historic mistake" and saying he hopes Trump changes his attitude toward Vladimir Putin. The appeal came after Trump waived new tariffs and sanctions on Russia following a reported deal to buy Russian diesel, even as Ukraine and Russia traded overnight attacks: Ukraine reported strikes on power substations in four regions that left tens of thousands without power and two people dead, while Russia said it downed 1,256 drones and battled fires at a St. Petersburg oil terminal. Zelensky said he ended a three-day pause on strikes on Russian refineries and that US officials want talks, possibly in Brussels as early as Tuesday or Wednesday, which he called himself "very open" to. The rupture matters because US pressure has focused on halting Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries while making no demands on Putin to stop bombing Ukrainian cities, and US intelligence sharing to Ukraine has been restored after being blocked for a period.

Egypt offers Saudi Arabia support as Houthi strikes intensify Egypt said it is ready to provide Saudi Arabia with all necessary support to defend its security, after Yemen's Houthi rebels repeatedly struck Riyadh's international airport and Aramco headquarters, killing at least 19 people and canceling flights and classes. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi requested an urgent parliament session on Sunday, October 18, to authorize the military to help defend the kingdom if it requests assistance. The Houthis have grown from roughly 30,000 fighters in 2015 to as many as 350,000 by 2024, according to a UN experts report, and resumed attacks on Saudi Arabia in July after renewed fighting collapsed a truce. The escalation risks drawing in Egypt, which joined the Saudi-led coalition in 2015 with a limited combat role, and comes as Saudi interceptor supplies are under pressure and diplomatic options remain limited.

Macron fights for relevance as protests grip lame-duck presidency President Emmanuel Macron is struggling to convert ideas into results in the final months of his term, with limited influence on EU budget talks, AI guardrails and climate policy, according to people in his party. Nationwide unrest over the cost of living drew about 550,000 demonstrators on Saturday, including 110,000 in Paris, with roughly 400 arrests, while far-right frontrunner Marine Le Pen has vowed to cut France's EU contribution. Macron secured a deal with Chancellor Friedrich Merz to protect the car industry by watering down emissions rules, and still leads the G7 and upcoming G20 summits, but faces a constitutional bar from a third consecutive term, fueling speculation of a 2032 comeback bid.

Poland investigates possible airspace violation near Lublin Poland's Operational Command said Sunday it is investigating a possible overnight airspace violation, with military and police teams searching south of Lublin for a possible crash site of an unidentified object. Officials are verifying a recorded radar signal and resident reports, and spokesman Jacek Goryszewski said it could have been a weather event, a large flock of birds, or a larger drone. No violation has been confirmed, but the probe comes as NATO member Poland, bordering Ukraine, has stepped up air defenses amid what it sees as rising Russian provocation, including a confirmed Russian missile entering its airspace in July.

Far-right AfD wins in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are rattling business confidence in Merz's reform and investment agenda, with executives warning the country needs trillions in investment and asking for proof the coalition can deliver.

Far-right election gains cast doubt on Germany's investment plans Far-right Alternative for Germany victories in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are raising doubts among business leaders that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government can deliver promised reforms and attract foreign investment. An unpublished report by the Made for Germany business initiative says Germany needs up to €4.1tn in investment by 2035, including €1tn each for energy and infrastructure, €700bn for defence and €600bn for AI, while its 147 members including Siemens and BMW have pledged €850bn by 2028. Executives including Commerzbank chief Bettina Orlopp and Axa chief Thomas Buberl, who warned a weak Germany could pull Europe down, are pressing Berlin for signs the coalition will accelerate reforms. Merz, facing unrest in his CDU after his party failed to win any seats in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, says he will not step down and will push ahead with plans to invest about €1tn in infrastructure and defence over the next decade.

Police investigate vehicle fence breach at Leipzig/Halle airport German police are investigating a breach at Leipzig/Halle airport after a vehicle appeared to have driven through a perimeter fence, with police first responding late Saturday evening in Schkeuditz, Germany. Officers searched the area around a large break in the chain-link and barbed-wire fence but said they had not found suspicious objects or unauthorized personnel, with further searches planned. One runway has been closed, but passenger traffic was running as normal on Sunday, an airport spokesperson said. The breach is the airport's second security lapse this year, following the August discovery of an explosive-laden drone near a runway that German officials attributed to Russia, which denied the allegation; Germany ordered measures including closing a Russian consulate and cultural centre in Berlin, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday, "The threat for us all is very real."

German lawmakers approve €10 monthly pension savings for children Germany's Bundestag has approved a scheme giving children aged 6 to 18 a monthly state payment of €10 toward private retirement savings, with the legislation still needing Bundesrat approval. Families can add their own contributions of up to €6,840 per year, and governing coalition lawmakers from the CDU/CSU and SPD called the measure historic, saying it would help young people start saving early and learn about capital markets. Opposition lawmakers, including the Greens' Stefan Schmidt, warned the design creates a two-tier system because children of wealthier families can accumulate far more. The plan is part of Germany's broader pension reform as an aging population puts pressure on the state retirement system.

The $10tn AI infrastructure boom is showing real cracks: dozens of projects delayed or blocked, datacenter debt selling off hard, and analysts judging only about a third of the pipeline credible. Skepticism is finally being priced in.

Doubts over AI spending weigh on the $10tn infrastructure boom Cracks are appearing in America's debt-laden $10tn AI infrastructure build-out as project delays, public backlash and shaky investor confidence mount. At least 47 large projects were delayed, withdrawn or blocked in 2026, analysts at Bernstein estimate only about 35 per cent of the planned US data centre pipeline is credible, and more than 1,000 communities have sought restrictions on AI infrastructure this year. Debt and shares of AI infrastructure groups sold off sharply this week, with CoreWeave losing almost 25 per cent, while higher borrowing costs and rising inflation raise questions about whether revenues of labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic can cover the costs. The strain matters for the broader economy because the build-out, projected to exceed $10tn between 2025 and 2032, has helped power tech stocks and US growth, and amid a broader bond market sell-off hedge funds' leveraged Treasury positions could amplify any financial stress.

Berkshire boosts Bending Spoons stake in software roll-up bet Berkshire Hathaway invested an additional $330 million in Italy's Bending Spoons, bringing its total investment to over $900 million, sending the Milan-based holding company's stock up 41% before settling at a market cap of about $30 billion. Bending Spoons has emerged as a buyer of out-of-favor software companies, acquiring Airtable for about $1.3 billion and Miro for $1.36 billion while cutting jobs at acquired firms like Airtable, Evernote, and Vimeo. The stake is a major endorsement of a Buffett-style consolidation model in an industry hit by the AI-driven "SaaSpocalypse," with the company reporting first-half revenue of over $700 million, more than doubling year over year, and net income of $177 million.

Meta's Muse AI can sext adult users while adult creators say their own accounts get restricted for similar content, and they see a double standard. The clash over AI-generated explicit content and creator livelihoods is the real story.

OnlyFans creators angry Meta allows Muse AI to sext Meta's Muse AI agent can engage in explicit sexting with adult users on its adults-only app, a policy the company defends as not blocking legal adult behavior. Adult creators say the stance is a double standard: several, including creators with over 100,000 Instagram followers, say their accounts are routinely restricted or removed for sexual content while Muse's explicit chat is allowed. Creators also cite unconsented AI deepfakes of themselves and worries about training data and future fully AI-generated porn undercutting their livelihoods, with some pushing for clearer AI clauses in contracts and an adults-only social media space from Meta.

Japan to launch first mission to collect samples from Mars moon Phobos Japan is set to launch a spacecraft Tuesday on the world's first mission to bring back samples from Phobos, one of Mars' two small moons, aboard a new H-3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's roughly 5-ton Martian Moons eXploration spacecraft, carrying 13 instruments including a French-German rover and a NASA sampling device, will arrive in the Mars region around August 2027, study Phobos for three years, and collect at least 10 grams of soil in two landing attempts before returning samples to Australia in 2031. Scientists hope the samples will settle how Phobos and Deimos formed, possibly revealing material ejected from Mars and traces of past microbial life, while data on radiation and the moons' environment could inform plans to use a Martian moon as a base for future crewed Mars missions. Multiple Russian attempts to land on Phobos, including one in 2011, have failed, and landing on the moon's extremely low gravity, one two-thousandth of Earth's, is a key challenge.

OpenAI plans a humanoid robot, but the brain is the hard part OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on the Sources podcast that the company will build a humanoid robot, arguing that the human form suits a world designed for people. Altman said the robot's "brain" matters more than its physical design, and he told Fortune he expects a cool demo in 2027 but no robots walking the streets for a few years after that. OpenAI's robotics job listings cover motion control, state estimation, actuator control, custom electromechanical actuators, and manufacturing, and the company has not disclosed what the demo will show, a price, or a release date. The effort puts OpenAI alongside Tesla's Optimus and XPENG's IRON humanoid, and it highlights how much software must do to make a robot body useful.

Pittsburgh's passing game is running thin: Roman Wilson, a favorite target of Aaron Rodgers, landed on injured reserve, the second key receiver lost in two weeks, leaving practice squad call-ups against Tampa Bay.

Steelers place receiver Roman Wilson on injured reserve with finger injury The Pittsburgh Steelers placed receiver Roman Wilson on injured reserve because of a finger injury sustained in their Week 5 win over the Indianapolis Colts, sidelining him for at least four weeks. He is the second key receiver lost in as many weeks, following Michael Pittman Jr., and the Steelers will be without three of their top five pass catchers against Tampa Bay, elevating Brandon Smith and Brandon Johnson from the practice squad. Wilson, a favorite downfield target of quarterback Aaron Rodgers with two touchdown catches this season, leaves Rodgers leaning on practice squad options as Pittsburgh manages its passing game in the weeks ahead.
