Democrats outraise Republicans as Trump's approval sinks before midterms

With two and a half weeks until the Nov. 3 midterms, Pennsylvania's four battleground House districts spotlight a Republican environment worsened by President Trump's 34 percent approval among state voters in the most recent Times/Inquirer/Siena poll. Federal Election Commission filings show Democratic Senate nominees dominating fundraising, including James Talarico's $60.2 million quarter in Texas, while Republicans leaned on record outside spending led by the Senate Leadership Fund's $272.9 million and Elon Musk's more than $276 million in donations, much of it backing Ken Paxton in Texas. The AdImpact project forecasts $11.6 billion in political advertising for the cycle, a record. The contest's outcome will help determine House control, with Cook projecting Democratic gains of two to six Senate seats and nine to 19 House seats.

Democrats are trying to turn Pete Hegseth into the face of an unpopular war with impeachment threats and ads, while the No Kings movement pivots from protest crowds to early-voting turnout. The midterms are now the organizing principle of the whole fall.

Democrats target Hegseth as Trump cancels execution livestream Democrats are making Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth a central figure in midterm campaign attacks over the unpopular war with Iran and higher gas prices, with Hakeem Jeffries promising impeachment if his party wins the House. A Quinnipiac poll found 57 percent of voters disapprove of Hegseth's performance, and vulnerable Republicans like Representative Zach Nunn have broken with the administration on the war. Meanwhile, President Trump canceled Hegseth's plan to livestream the Dec. 3 firing-squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, a public rebuke of a cabinet secretary he has otherwise continued to back.

"No Kings" movement turns from protests to voting push The "No Kings" coalition, known for anti-Trump protests, is holding thousands of "No Kings: Vote Early" events across the country on Saturday, Oct. 17, to promote early voting ahead of the midterm elections. Organizers described more than 2,500 events, ranging from block parties to a "Paws to the Polls" march in Golden, Colorado, where volunteers will help people check registrations, make voting plans, and train as poll watchers with groups like Common Cause. The coalition, which includes partners such as the ACLU, Black Voters Matter, and the League of Women Voters, previously drew millions to three rounds of nationwide protests against what it calls President Trump's monarchical conduct. After three mobilizations "designed to send a message," Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin said the movement now aims to test whether its protest energy can instead drive record midterm early voting turnout, with events barred from endorsing candidates or letting them speak.

Oregon teacher fought school shooter before armed bystander killed suspect A teenage gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday after shooting his way into the building, but an unnamed teacher tackled the 16-year-old and tried to disarm him on a classroom floor. A 36-year-old father driving past the school, identified by his family as carpenter Kaylub Giamanco, grabbed a legally concealed .40 calibre pistol from his vehicle, ran inside, and fired multiple times, killing the suspect. Police identified the suspect as Griffin J John II, a former special educational needs student at the school, who carried roughly 44 additional rounds of shotgun ammunition when stopped, and said both interventions 'almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed'. Officials are still investigating his motive and how he acquired the gun, with a search warrant executed at his home and two more victims identified as five-year-old Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert.

Washington's Russia sanctions waiver and the unexplained Starlink restrictions that dented Ukraine's air defenses land together, and both point the same way: Kyiv's wartime lifelines now run through American politics and one commercial vendor.

Trump waives new Russia sanctions as row with Zelensky escalates President Trump issued an executive order late Friday waiving the Russia sanctions mandated by the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which he signed last month, certifying that a waiver was in the national interest. The law required new penalties on Russia's defence and energy sectors and its shadow oil fleet by Sunday, and gave the president power to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries buying Russian oil. The decision follows a deal letting Russia sell diesel internationally and comes as relations with Kyiv deteriorate: Zelensky said the waiver helps Putin prolong the war after a massive overnight attack on more than 15 Ukrainian energy facilities, and Democrats including Elizabeth Warren blasted the move as defying congressional intent.

Starlink outage hobbled Ukraine's defenses; senators seek Pentagon probe Temporary restrictions on Ukraine's access to SpaceX's Starlink and its military version, Starshield, degraded Ukraine's air defense interceptors just ahead of a fresh Russian bombardment, and their cause remains unclear. President Donald Trump said he did not order the limits and did not think Elon Musk did either, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that connection speeds have improved but service has not been fully restored. The restrictions came weeks after Ukrainian forces relied on Starlink terminals to remotely operate drones, bombs, and robotic ground vehicles during Operation Vivaldi, a counter-offensive that reclaimed more than 100 square miles and blocked Russia's push toward Slovyansk and Kramatorsk in Donetsk. Bipartisan senators, including four Republicans, are asking the Pentagon inspector general to probe the reported disruptions, underscoring how a single commercial vendor has become a wartime national-security dependency for Kyiv.

Iran-backed militias funneling money back to cash-starved IRGC, CENTCOM says CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said Friday that Iran-backed militia groups, longtime recipients of IRGC funding, are now withholding payments to their soldiers to send money back to the IRGC, which has stopped paying its own troops. The reversal comes as the US naval blockade has cost Iran $25 billion in lost oil revenue, and CENTCOM and the Treasury Department frozen $350 million in Iranian cryptocurrency. The financial strain has coincided with more Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, which Cooper attributed to desperation within the IRGC, though 400 ships and 100 million barrels of oil still transited the strait last week. CENTCOM has nearly paused strikes on Iranian anti-ship missile and drone launchers under a White House order ahead of the midterm elections, and US officials worry the attacks could spike oil prices as Washington awaits Iran's response to a counterproposal to end the war.

South Africans seek justice for apartheid-era crimes decades later Sharpeville massacre survivors and victims' families, along with descendants like Paulina Mathinye, filed an application in the Gauteng High Court in September challenging the Indemnity Act 61 of 1961, an apartheid-era law they say blocks their bid for reparations 66 years after police shot at least 69 protesters in 1960. The case is part of a broader wave: a court found 1967 death of Chief Albert Luthuli was a killing by police, and inquests into the Cradock Four deaths and Steve Biko's 1977 death in detention have been reopened. The push follows revelations that hundreds of Truth and Reconciliation Commission prosecution recommendations were never pursued, and a Ramaphosa-established inquiry into whether a secret deal shelved them is due to report in December.

A Hamburg court has convicted two men of spying and plotting attacks on behalf of Iran, while Berlin debates loosening the constitutional debt brake to keep funding civilian aid to Ukraine: two tests of Germany's security and fiscal commitments.

Hamburg jails Iranian spy pair as block trial exposes espionage scandal A Hamburg court sentenced two men to four-and-a-half and eight-and-a-half years in prison for plotting attacks on behalf of Iran's al-Quds Brigades against Central Council of Jews head Josef Schuster and German-Israeli society president Volker Beck, including plans for an arson attack on a Berlin kosher deli. The 54-year-old Dane and 43-year-old Afghan, arrested in Aarhus, Denmark, and extradited to Germany, were convicted of espionage and attempted murder. Separately, the trial of steakhouse heiress Christina Block, accused of ordering the violent abduction of her two children from Denmark in 2023-24 by an Israeli security team, led investigators to former German intelligence chief August Hanning, arrested this month on treason and espionage charges for allegedly passing state secrets to a foreign power.

German parliament approves state pension savings for children Germany's Bundestag has approved a scheme giving children aged 6 to 18 a monthly state payment of €10 toward private retirement savings, with the money invested over decades. Parents and grandparents can add up to €6,840 a year, which opposition lawmakers including the Greens' Stefan Schmidt warned would create a two-tier system favoring children of wealthier families. Lawmakers from the governing conservatives and SPD hailed the plan as historic and part of a broader pension reform agenda as Germany's aging population strains the state retirement system. The legislation still needs approval from the Bundesrat, which represents Germany's states.

German development minister seeks debt-brake exemption for Ukraine aid German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan said on Friday she is seeking an exemption from the country's constitutional debt brake to sustain civilian aid to Ukraine, arguing budget cuts will otherwise make current support levels impossible. Funding for Ukraine in her ministry's budget has fallen to about €330 million ($371 million) this year from €750 million in 2023, and she raised the issue at IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. Her proposal is backed by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul but faces opposition within Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU, which has resisted exceptions beyond those already approved for defence spending. The outcome will shape whether Germany, Ukraine's strongest supporter, can maintain long-term civilian funding without loosening its borrowing rules.

Tech sell-off deepens as doubts grow over AI spending and debt Tech stocks capped their worst week since late June on Friday, with the S&P 500 falling 1.1% to 7,659.44 and the Nasdaq sinking 2.1% to 26,140.03 as chipmakers including Micron, AMD, and Intel led declines. The sell-off reflects growing doubts that debt-financed AI infrastructure spending can pay off: AI providers are projected to spend $7 trillion through 2030 against Gartner forecasts of no more than $3.6 trillion in related revenue, and roughly a third of AI capital spending is now debt-funded. Banks are pulling back, with global AI debt issuance falling from $113 billion in June to $23 billion in September, CoreWeave's debt yields topping 15%, and roughly $18 billion in loans tied to an Oracle data center campus moving into stressed territory. Because markets and the broader economy have become increasingly tied to the AI boom, a sustained decline in AI investment and tech stocks could put US economic growth at risk.

Lufthansa weighs €1bn software sale as Stellantis hires engineers Lufthansa is exploring the sale of software businesses within its Lufthansa Systems division, including Lido, NetLine and possibly Sirax, in a deal worth just under €1bn. The assets generate over €200mn in revenue and about €50mn of ebitda, with private equity likely buyers, as the airline sheds non-core units after selling its catering business in 2023 and AirPlus in 2024. Meanwhile, Stellantis said it will hire hundreds of additional engineers in Europe and the US this year as it rolls out dozens of new models under a €60bn investment plan through 2030, a contrast with Volkswagen and Renault, which are cutting engineering staff. The two moves show legacy transport companies repositioning around technology in opposite ways: Lufthansa divesting aviation IT to focus on flying, Stellantis expanding engineering as part of its turnaround.

Lagarde says sustainable public finances are key to stability ECB President Christine Lagarde told the International Monetary and Financial Committee in Thailand on October 17 that fiscal sustainability remains a "crucial anchor" for economic stability, urging governments to make any response to the energy shock temporary, targeted and tailored. She said countries with high debt should consolidate, reprioritize spending and rebuild buffers, and she called for a return to an international order grounded in openness and the rule of law. Her remarks came at the IMF's annual meetings as the ECB, after two rate hikes in June and September, weighs another increase; governing council member Joachim Nagel said the job "isn't done so far." Lagarde also warned that the energy shock is too large to look through and that more than 30 central banks have expressed interest in the Eurosystem's enhanced repo facility.

Apple's updated App Store rules target 'nudify' AI apps Apple has updated its App Store rules to more explicitly ban apps that create nonconsensual intimate imagery using AI. Developers must now proactively prevent and remove nonconsensual sexual images, and those who fail to implement adequate safeguards or remedy violations after notice may be removed from the store. Apple also tightened rules against bait-and-switch apps that add nudification features after approval, and said apps facilitating human trafficking or child exploitation will be pulled and blocked from alternative distribution. The changes follow criticism after X users used Grok this year to make sexualized deepfakes, including of minors, and a July order from San Francisco's city attorney that Apple remove 13 'nudify' apps.

iPhone Duo preorders slip into 2027 as demand soars Apple's first foldable, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, opened for preorders on October 16 at 8AM ET, and delivery estimates for every configuration slipped to late January 2027 within an hour. Apple called preorder demand "extraordinary" and said it will keep accepting online orders, though the phone still goes on sale in stores October 23. It features a 5.4-inch outer display, a 7.6-inch inner screen with a matte nano-texture finish and a barely visible crease, Touch ID instead of Face ID, an IP68 rating, the A20 Pro chip, and revamped iOS 27 software built for the foldable form factor. The device, launched under new CEO John Ternus, enters a foldable market seven years after Samsung's Galaxy Fold, with out-of-warranty inner display repairs costing $999 without AppleCare Plus.

The Rays and Guardians get squeezed into four straight games if their ALCS goes the distance after rain pushed Game 4 to Saturday, a genuine bullpen stress test with the rested Brewers waiting in Milwaukee. LeBron, meanwhile, dunked in a preseason loss.

LeBron James throws down lob dunk in Sixers home preseason debut LeBron James delighted a sellout crowd of 19,746 in Philadelphia with a two-handed dunk off a half-court lob from Tyrese Maxey in his Sixers home preseason debut on Friday night, finishing with eight points and eight rebounds in a 125-120 overtime loss to the Celtics. James, 41, signed with Philadelphia in July for his NBA-record 24th season after eight years with the Lakers, and has credited Maxey with swaying his decision. The game did not count toward his career stats, and the Sixers open the regular season Tuesday at Madison Square Garden against New York before hosting Cleveland in Thursday's home opener.

Rain pushes ALCS Game 4 to Saturday, compressing Rays-Guardians schedule Game 4 of the ALCS between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays was postponed Friday night in Cleveland due to rain and rescheduled for 8 p.m. ET Saturday, with Game 5 moved to 5 p.m. ET Sunday, an originally scheduled off-day. Nick Martinez will start for the Rays and Shawn Armstrong will open a bullpen game for the Guardians, who lead the series 2-1 after winning Game 3 3-2 on Thursday. If the series goes the distance, the teams would play Games 4 through 7 on four consecutive days, testing pitching depth while the Brewers wait in the World Series with a week off before Game 1 on Oct. 23 in Milwaukee.
