Judge forces White House to restore access for three outlets

The New York Times reports journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were allowed back into the White House around noon Thursday after Judge Timothy J. Kelly ordered the administration to immediately restore their credentials. The return followed a chaotic morning in which reporters were still turned away despite the overnight ruling, after President Trump barred the outlets last week over coverage he deemed fake. The Times reports the White House television pool remained suspended Thursday, leaving President Trump's summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping without live American network footage.

The Senate left presidential war powers intact in a 49-50 vote against ending Iran hostilities while courts checked detention and deportation policies. The day reads as institutions testing the limits of executive action.

Senate blocks resolution to end Iran war in 49-50 vote The Republican-led Senate on Thursday defeated a concurrent resolution directing President Donald Trump to remove US forces from hostilities with Iran, leaving presidential war powers intact. Four Republicans joined Democrats in support while Sen. John Fetterman voted no and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks did not vote. NPR linked the vote to rising fuel prices and GOP concern before the November midterms, while CNBC noted the measure was largely symbolic because concurrent resolutions carry no force of law.

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to allow third country deportations The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to pause a First Circuit ruling and allow third country deportations to resume while it seeks review, WaPo reported. The appeals court had upheld a federal judge's finding that the policy violates due process by failing to give migrants sufficient notice and a chance to raise torture or persecution claims. WaPo reports DHS has sent more than 25,000 migrants to third countries, mostly in Latin America and Africa, since the policy began last year.

Judge finds NYC immigration detention conditions inhumane and unconstitutional U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan found conditions at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City were inhumane and unconstitutional in a 127-page opinion issuing a permanent injunction. He said ICE held far more people than intended for far longer than the 12-hour limit, depriving detainees of sleep, sanitation, food, water and medical care. The order requires at least 50 square feet per person, room temperatures between 68 and 74 degrees, three daily meals with bottled water, hygiene supplies, bedding for overnight stays, on-site medical staff and confidential attorney calls.

Deaths of two University of Mississippi students spotlight kratom AP reported two University of Mississippi students, Aidan Hamilton and Robert Strang, were found dead Monday in separate locations on and off campus, with toxicology reports still pending. Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said packages of kratom sold at a retail store were found during the investigation and urged people to avoid kratom, while noting there was no confirmed information it contributed to either death. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said state agencies were expediting toxicology reports, as AP placed the deaths in the context of growing federal and state scrutiny of kratom risks and regulation.

The Economist said the main achievement was a two-month extension of the trade truce to Jan. 10, with little progress on AI, security or rare earth compliance. The FT emphasized cooperation rhetoric and a planned AI Dialogue, while The Economist stressed pageantry over substance and a delayed Taiwan arms package.

He said France was not getting involved in any conflict and said sending Rafale fighters would depend on how the situation evolves. The move follows attacks that shut the East-West pipeline and the Yasref refinery, a key wartime route letting Saudi exports avoid the Strait of Hormuz.

Meta sits near $2 trillion after its Muse rally while Anthropic locked in $11.6 billion of Akamai cloud capacity. Rising Treasury yields threaten both stories as markets debate inflation, AI debt and the Fed path.

Meta nears $2 trillion after best month since 2013 Meta shares jumped 36% in September after the release of its Muse personal AI assistant, leaving the stock about 1% away from a $2 trillion valuation and on pace for its best month since July 2013, Bloomberg reported. CNBC emphasized a different angle, focusing on CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiling the pendant-like Muse Charm device and expanded AI glasses ahead of OpenAI's event while noting the strategy remains unproven. Both outlets noted investor optimism about Muse driving transactions, alongside questions about heavy AI spending and a workable revenue model.
