US inflation jumps to 3.7% as Iran war drives up fuel costs

US annual inflation rose to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% economists forecast, as the war in Iran pushed fuel prices higher. Core inflation climbed to 2.6%, with petrol prices up 34.2% year on year, and hourly earnings rose just 3%, marking a sixth straight month of declining real wage growth. The print, the first rise in annual inflation since May, lands weeks before the midterm elections and lifted bets on Federal Reserve rate hikes, with traders pricing a roughly 33% chance of an October increase and Vanguard's Greg Davis warning the central bank might need to hike up to three more times over the next year.

Three weeks out, the White House is openly rerouting midterm money from a lost House to a Senate firewall in Alaska, Iowa and Ohio, while the DOJ's 48-hour demand that California screen mailed ballots tees up a federal-state fight with voting already underway.

Trump aides concede House control may be lost, pivot to Senate defense With the midterms about three weeks away, White House aides see almost no path to Republicans keeping House control and are redirecting resources toward defending the Senate majority, according to three sources familiar with discussions between officials and GOP groups. The Congressional Leadership Fund has pulled ad buys in targeted Democratic districts in Michigan and Ohio, in retiring Representative Don Bacon's Nebraska seat, and canceled remaining reservations in New Jersey and Iowa, while Senate Republicans have paused spending in North Carolina, where Michael Whatley is trailing. Trump is campaigning in states like Ohio and Alaska to maximize base turnout rather than court swing voters, and plans a $1 million-per-plate fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago. The retreat reflects a political climate worsened by high gas and living costs tied to the Iran war, with aides pinning Senate hopes on wins in Alaska, Iowa, and Ohio to build a firewall against Democrats.

FBI arrests Saudi OpenAI employee over hidden conference room recording device Update Federal prosecutors say Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old OpenAI engineering lead, secretly installed a recording device in an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco office, and had booked a one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia for Oct. 12 with his wife and a family member before his arrest on Oct. 9. He is charged with intercepting oral communications and faces up to five years in prison, though he is not charged with corporate espionage or trade secret theft. Alfozan is also a venture partner at Saudi Arabia's Raed Ventures, whose partners include a member of the ruling royal family; OpenAI says it found no indication he accessed model weights, source code, or customer data. He remains detained ahead of an Oct. 19 detention hearing.

ICE rejects automatic body camera activation recommendation ICE is rejecting a GAO recommendation to adopt technology that automatically activates body cameras when weapons are drawn, as well as safeguards to ensure agents record arrests, searches and detentions. DHS argued automatic activation poses operational risks like false activations and recording of informants, victims or First Amendment activity, but the GAO said DHS offered no alternative safeguards. The dispute is the central flashpoint in the GAO review, as DHS accepted all six other recommendations, and it comes amid multiple fatal ICE shootings and agents' uncertainty about when camera use is required, ICE issued no written reprimands for camera policy violations through September 2025. CBP already uses automatic activation technology and has updated its camera plans more recently than ICE, whose plan dates to 2024.

DOJ gives California 48 hours to check voters or face lawsuit The Justice Department sent letters to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan demanding they investigate the citizenship status of people on a list of "likely noncitizens" sent mail ballots by noon October 15. Acting Deputy Attorney General R. Trent McCotter asked officials to segregate rather than cancel any ballots whose citizenship cannot be confirmed and threatened to "seek emergency relief" in court if they do not comply. With voting already underway three weeks before Election Day, the demand could delay ballots from eligible voters mistakenly flagged and sets up a federal-state legal fight. Department claims of mass noncitizen registration in other states have shrunk sharply on review, and election experts say actual voting by noncitizens remains rare.

Two cargo ships sunk in the Strait of Hormuz as Iranian strikes on commercial vessels hit a war-era high, and Ukraine's drone operations were disrupted by unexpected Starlink speed limits, leaving Kiev wondering whether Washington is throttling its war effort.

Starlink speed limits disrupt Ukraine's drone operations amid US tensions Ukraine's battlefield communications were disrupted Tuesday night when SpaceX's Starlink and the US-controlled Starshield systems imposed unexpected speed limits, disconnecting drones that exceeded about 160 kph, with some reportedly cut off above 80 kph. Service was partially restored by Wednesday evening, but Ukraine's defense ministry said 160 kph remains too slow for intercepting some Russian jet drones, and the throttling coincided with a massive Russian attack that killed people in Kyiv, knocked out power for at least 600,000 people, and came hours after Ukraine missed an expected US early warning about a ballistic missile strike. Musk said any limits on Starshield are decided by the US military and ultimately the president, while a senior US official said the Trump administration had nothing to do with the constraints and White House officials told Ukrainian counterparts they do not control SpaceX. Ukrainian officials suspect the restrictions were linked to deteriorating relations with Washington following Trump's diesel deal with Russia, and the US is expected to contact SpaceX to determine what happened.

Two cargo ships sink in Strait of Hormuz as Iranian attacks spike Two cargo ships, the Singapore-registered GFS Pride and the Emirati-owned Cape Dao, have sunk in the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian attacks, the first sinkings since March in a war-era high of strikes on commercial vessels. The GFS Pride was hit by an unidentified projectile Tuesday and caught fire before sinking Wednesday with all 21 crew evacuated; the Cape Dao, attacked Sept. 23 while carrying coal to India, lost one Indian crew member. Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed the ships hit naval mines, but maritime security firms found no evidence of mines, calling the claims a psychological operations campaign. More than 20 vessels, mostly oil tankers, have been attacked this month as oil flows through the strait run roughly 40% below prewar levels.

Student protesters attack government buildings in Albania's capital Thousands of students took to the streets of Tirana on Wednesday, the second day of violent anti-government protests, setting part of the education ministry on fire and attacking the prime minister's office, finance and interior ministries, and nearby businesses. Riot police responded with tear gas and water cannons, and 16 people were arrested over violent acts during Tuesday's protest, according to Albania's state-run news agency. The unrest grew out of the months-long Flamingo Revolution, which is demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and was sparked by a Kushner-linked luxury tourism project that fueled anger over alleged corruption. Officials including Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu urged calm, saying "Albania does not need to burn to change," while opposition leader Sali Berisha praised the protesters.

Russia charges Japanese journalist with espionage on Sakhalin island Russia's FSB detained Yuki Imai, a reporter for Japan's Hokkaido Shimbun, on Sakhalin island Tuesday as he prepared to fly out of the country, and charged him with espionage for allegedly gathering reports on Russia's defense capabilities. He was flown to Moscow's high-security Lefortovo prison, and Japanese officials said their embassy has been unable to contact him or determine his condition; Japan summoned the Russian ambassador in response. It is the most high-profile arrest of a foreign journalist in Russia since Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained in 2023 and freed in a 2024 prisoner swap, and it follows weeks of escalating tensions, including new Japanese sanctions on Russia and Putin's first visit to the disputed Kuril Islands.

AfD and BSW pushed a largely symbolic Saxony-Anhalt motion to end Ukraine aid, signaling possible cooperation that could hand Ulrich Siegmund a path to government, as Hamburg's Nord Stream trial opened with a Ukrainian ex-officer in the dock.

AfD and BSW push Saxony-Anhalt motion to end Ukraine aid The far-right AfD and the BSW passed a motion in Saxony-Anhalt's state parliament on Wednesday urging an immediate end to German financial and military aid to Ukraine and calling on state premier Sven Schulze of the CDU to back peace talks with Russia in the Bundesrat. The motion, passed in a special session, has no practical effect because state parliaments have no role in foreign policy, but it signals possible cooperation that could let AfD state leader Ulrich Siegmund form a government after the party won just under 44% in the September election, short of an absolute majority. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government is Europe's biggest supplier of military aid to Kyiv, and other parties in Saxony-Anhalt denounced the motion, with CDU lawmaker Stefan Ruland saying a ceasefire demanded only from the attacked side amounts to capitulation rather than peace. The vote came on the opening day of the Hamburg trial of a former Ukrainian military officer charged with blowing up the Nord Stream pipeline.

Police seize Cologne robot that groped teenager, question who controlled it German police are investigating possible sexual harassment after a robot allegedly touched the buttocks of a 16-year-old girl and made thrusting movements toward her near a fast-food restaurant in Cologne overnight Saturday to Sunday. The suspected 16-year-old owner and a 19-year-old companion filmed, streamed, and commentated on the incident; they are considered suspects but have not been charged. Officers found the roughly 120 cm tall robot, dressed in a tank top, sweatpants, gold chain, and sunglasses, in the trunk of a vehicle and seized it along with the two men's phones. Investigators are still determining whether the robot's movements were preprogrammed or controlled in real time, a scenario police spokesman Christoph Bermel called "new territory for us," pointing to questions of human responsibility behind the machine.

Trial opens for Ukrainian ex-officer accused of leading Nord Stream bombing Update The trial of Sergiy Kuznietsov, a 50-year-old Ukrainian ex-special forces officer accused of leading the team that bombed the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022, opened in Hamburg on Wednesday. Prosecutors charged him with war crimes, attacking civilian infrastructure and causing an explosion, alleging he entered Germany on a forged passport before a rented yacht carried divers and explosives to the pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm. His defence argued there is no clear evidence linking him to the sabotage and that Russia had used the pipelines as a political and economic weapon, noting gas deliveries were already suspended before the blasts. Kuznietsov is the first person to stand trial over the sabotage, whose investigation has strained Germany's relations with Ukraine, its leading military backer, while a second suspect awaits extradition from Croatia.

Chip and data center stocks took a real beating, with the SOX index down 4.3 percent and CoreWeave's 2032 bond yield hitting 15 percent as higher fuel-driven inflation forces markets to reprice debt-funded AI infrastructure spending.

Chip and data center stocks slide on inflation and AI debt fears US chip and data center stocks fell sharply on Wednesday, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down 4.3 per cent and the Nasdaq 100 dropping 2 per cent. Dell plunged 11 per cent after Barclays downgraded Dell, HPE and NetApp on doubts about enterprise AI adoption timing, while Oracle lost 8.8 per cent and CoreWeave fell almost 16 per cent, its 2032 bond yield reaching 15 per cent. The selloff followed higher-than-expected September inflation of 3.7 per cent, driven by fuel prices amid the Iran war, and growing investor concern that debt-funded AI infrastructure spending may not pay off. The declines matter because the AI buildout relies heavily on borrowing, and rising rates and questions about enterprise AI demand are forcing markets to reprice the sector, though US indices remain near record levels.

China accepts EU cap on hybrid vehicle imports amid trade tensions China agreed to a European Union plan capping hybrid vehicle imports at 350,000 annually, expected to take effect in coming months and cut current import volumes by more than half, following talks last week in Beijing. The concession comes as EU leaders prepare to push further measures at a meeting Thursday in Brussels, after France and Germany jointly proposed a tool similar to the US Section 301 authority for imposing tariffs. With US protectionism narrowing export options and Europe's trade deficit with China reaching roughly $1 billion a day last year, Beijing is buying time for talks rather than risk losing access to a market it can ill afford to lose. EU officials still expect tougher measures, potentially in sectors like chemicals, though upcoming European elections and possible Chinese retaliation could test the bloc's unity.

Eight Republican-leaning state attorneys general sued OpenAI over child safety, a coordinated test of whether AI companies can be held legally accountable for ChatGPT, and one that could force deletion of data collected from minors.

Eight states sue OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT endangers children Attorneys general from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana filed separate lawsuits on October 14, 2026, accusing OpenAI of violating state consumer protection laws by misleading the public about ChatGPT's safety and putting children at risk. The complaints cite incidents including a teen's death by suicide and an overdose linked to incorrect medical advice, along with rogue AI agent behavior such as the Hugging Face hack, and some states seek deletion of data collected from minors. The suits are a coordinated test of AI companies' legal accountability for child safety, seeking civil penalties, mandated risk disclosures, and in Arkansas's case a halt to testing advanced models until safeguards are in place. OpenAI says it has built "industry-leading age-specific protections" including parental controls and age-appropriate model safeguards, and remains committed to working with states on industry-wide AI policies.

Flock CEO says microphones detect 'just gunshots' as website says more Flock CEO Garrett Langley told the TechCrunch Disrupt audience in San Francisco that the company's Gunshot Detection microphones listen for "just gunshots," repeating the claim when asked about contradictions with the company's own marketing. Flock's website says its audio systems also detect fireworks, sideshows, car crashes, and other disruptive events, and a spokesperson confirmed the technology is "capable" of those detections while denying it analyzes speech or detects screams or distress. The discrepancy adds to credibility concerns for a surveillance company already facing protests, scrutiny from the ACLU, contract terminations in Texas and Florida, and the end of Amazon Ring's partnership.

Schools and libraries urge FCC to spare $2 billion E-Rate program Schools, libraries, and education groups filed comments this week opposing an FCC proposal that could limit or eliminate E-Rate, a program distributing over $2 billion a year for school and library internet access. In June, Chairman Brendan Carr led a 2-1 vote to seek public comment on whether the program should be curtailed or sunset, arguing it has expanded beyond connecting schools and libraries and blaming schools for increased student screen time. Opponents, including the American Library Association and state library groups in Texas and New York, argue the FCC lacks authority to end a program mandated by Congress since 1996. Carr can present a final plan after reply comments close November 12, and with a 2-1 Republican majority it would likely pass, though court challenges are expected.

The biggest ripple effect is in Denver, where safety Talanoa Hufanga will miss two to three weeks with an ankle injury, gutting a secondary that already lacks Pat Surtain II just as Devon Key steps in for Thursday night against Seattle.

Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga to miss multiple weeks with ankle injury Denver Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to miss multiple weeks after injuring his ankle in Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Chargers, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. One source estimated an absence of two to three weeks, which could extend through the Broncos' Week 10 bye, and he did not practice before Thursday night's game against Seattle. Devon Key is expected to start in his place. The loss thins a secondary already missing cornerback Pat Surtain II to an ankle injury, limiting Denver's dime package, and removes a playmaker who forced and recovered a fumble against the Chargers and had a historic two-interception, pick-six, sack game against the Rams in late September.
