Pope Leo diagnosed with lung cancer after successful surgery

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after surgeons at Rome's Gemelli Hospital removed the lower lobe of his right lung in a 90-minute operation on Tuesday, the Vatican said. The 71-year-old pope, who announced the nodule himself at his Sunday blessing, woke normally after surgery and was recovering in his hospital room, with no complications reported. Vatican sources said further tests are underway to check whether the cancer has spread, while the pope's schedule has been cleared until October 20. The diagnosis is his first health scare since his election in May 2025, and he remains keen to proceed with a planned early-November trip to Latin America, including Peru.

Bipartisan senators pressed President Trump to cancel his diesel deal with Putin, a federal judge froze tree-clearing at a D.C. golf course, and Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as ambassador to Greece. It added up to a day of pressure from several directions.

Bipartisan senators urge Trump to rescind Russian diesel deal Twelve senators, six Republicans and six Democrats, sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Tuesday urging him to cancel his deal with Vladimir Putin that lets Russia export 4.8 million metric tons, or nearly 36 million barrels, of diesel on the global market through mid-April. The senators wrote that the deal "is a gift to our adversary and a betrayal of our Allies," argued it would offer little or no relief to American fuel prices, and said it contradicts the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which they asked Trump to enforce by rescinding General License No. 135. Trump announced the arrangement on Friday after a call with Putin and has defended it, writing on Truth Social that "I made the right choice for the American People." He has also told reporters the diesel is for the world market rather than the United States, and the White House did not immediately respond to the letter.

Judge temporarily blocks tree-clearing at East Potomac Golf Links in D.C. A federal judge has temporarily barred the government from cutting down more trees at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., after officials razed at least 430 of a planned up to 529 trees over a weekend, despite a May order requiring court approval before removing more than 10. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes extended the restraining order through Oct. 26, required three business days' advance written notice before any irreparable modification, and ordered Interior Department and National Park Service officials to testify at an Oct. 19 hearing about whether the court was misled about the plans. President Trump wants to redevelop the historically affordable municipal course into a championship-level venue, and plaintiffs including the D.C. Preservation League, which sued in February, call the clearing a pretext for unauthorized redevelopment, while the government says the work addresses deferred maintenance under a 2019 National Park Service report.

Cornell bans fraternity parties amid 2024 rape investigation Cornell University has barred all Interfraternity Council houses from hosting parties and social events for the remainder of the 2026-27 school year under a directive announced by President Michael Kotlikoff on Tuesday. The ban responds to a lawsuit filed last month by a student identified as Jane Doe, who alleges she was drugged and gang-raped at the Chi Phi house in October 2024; that chapter was closed and remains barred from campus. The university will also add staff to its Office of Civil Rights, including a sexual misconduct case manager, and allow New York State Police investigators to examine campus sexual assaults. Separately, the Cornell Concert Commission canceled a homecoming concert and the Ithaca Common Council imposed a moratorium on event permits for Cornell-affiliated groups through Nov. 4.

Kimberly Guilfoyle resigns as US ambassador to Greece amid misconduct allegations Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as US ambassador to Greece on Tuesday, announcing her decision on X within two hours of the White House asking her to step down over allegations of improper and possibly illegal conduct before and during her tenure in Athens. President Trump said his administration acted because it "didn't like what we were reading" about her, after the Wall Street Journal reported she allegedly threatened a Greek official, accepted improper gifts, and asked a Trump donor to pay a $100,000 credit card bill in exchange for access to administration officials. Guilfoyle denied the accusations and said she would vigorously defend her name, but a US official said the State Department's inspector general was looking into the allegations, and senior Democrats including Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Gregory Meeks have called for investigations. Her departure leaves the Athens post vacant as Greece gains importance for US energy policy in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Man sentenced to 40 years to life for Tupac Shakur's murder Duane "Keffe D" Davis was sentenced Tuesday in Las Vegas to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, convicted in August of orchestrating the fatal shooting near the Strip. Judge Carli Kierny imposed 20 years for first-degree murder plus a consecutive 20 years for using a deadly weapon, after a jury found Davis procured the gun handed to associates who opened fire amid a gang feud. The case went unsolved for nearly three decades and was revived after Davis discussed the killing in a 2018 documentary and a 2019 memoir, though he maintains his innocence and plans to appeal.

Kim tours US-range missile exhibit as Trump floats leader talks North Korean leader Kim Jong Un toured his new National Defense Revolution Museum, which displays the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile designed to reach the US mainland with multiple warheads, plus submarine-launched and hypersonic missiles. The visit, publicized by state media on Tuesday, came as President Trump floated meeting Kim during an Asian trip next month. Pyongyang has refused engagement for roughly seven years, calling nuclear talks a daydream, and its arms and troop exports to Russia have given Kim leverage to keep modernizing while Washington seeks dialogue.

Saudi Arabia intercepts missile near Aramco HQ as Yemen conflict escalates Saudi Arabia struck Houthi-controlled oil depots in Sana'a and Hodeidah on Tuesday, then intercepted a missile fired at Dharan, home to Saudi Aramco's headquarters. An evacuation order had been issued for the building, and fragments from the interception reportedly fell on a residential area, though Aramco offered no official confirmation. The exchanges followed a Houthi attack on Riyadh's King Khalid international airport on Saturday that killed 13 people and wounded 300, and mark a significant escalation with both sides threatening the other's energy infrastructure.

Trump and Netanyahu debated striking Iran before elections President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu discussed last week the possibility of a joint US-Israeli operation against Iran before Israel's Oct. 27 elections and the US midterms, after Netanyahu raised concerns about Iran reconstituting its nuclear program, including the potential Pickaxe Mountain enrichment site. A White House official called reports of the discussions false, saying Trump will not attack Iran before the midterms, though militaries remain on alert, and Defense Secretary Hegseth and Central Command back resuming strikes while most advisers favor continued sanctions. Renewed strikes could bring Iranian missile retaliation, potentially postpone the Israeli election and raise US gas prices, while Qatari-mediated talks over a US counterproposal await Iran's response.

Berlin's would-be left coalition is in trouble, as the SPD and Greens suspended exploratory talks with the Left Party over a diluted antisemitism statement, leaving the capital without a government and opening the door to the CDU.

Radio glitch triggers false hijack alert, German jets scramble A Corendon Airlines Boeing 737-800 flying from Corfu transmitted the hijack code 7500 over Croatia before landing safely at Nuremberg airport on Tuesday, prompting German air force Eurofighters to scramble from Neuburg Air Base and escort the aircraft while the airport was briefly closed. The airline blamed a brief malfunction in the radio communication system, and police found no danger; the airport resumed normal operations after six flights were delayed and two diverted to Cologne and Prague. Earlier, a reported drone sighting had already disrupted traffic, and the alert follows heightened concern in Germany after an explosives-laden drone was found near a runway at Leipzig/Halle airport in August.

Germany detains two Turkish citizens over Polish Starlink station fire German police have detained two Turkish citizens suspected of setting fire to a Starlink station in Poland's Masovia province last month, Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski announced on Monday. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Special Services Minister Tomasz Siemoniak described the blaze as an act of hybrid warfare and alleged Russian services were behind it, saying Moscow increasingly recruits people linked to the criminal underworld for such attacks. Starlink is widely used by Ukraine's military, and the station is located not far from Poland's borders with Belarus and Ukraine, making the arson a security concern across NATO Europe. Russia typically dismisses European sabotage allegations as anti-Russian hysteria.

Berlin SPD and Greens halt coalition talks with Left Party Berlin's SPD and Greens on Tuesday interrupted exploratory coalition talks with the Left Party, a week after the three agreed to open negotiations. The move followed a meeting of 44 Left Party state lawmakers who signed a statement on antisemitism and Israel's right to exist that dropped agreed language, including calling Israel's right to exist "non-negotiable" and potential sanctions such as expulsion from the party. The Left won last month's regional election with just under 26% of the vote, and the three parties together would hold a slim majority, but the collapse leaves the capital without a left-leaning government in place and opens the possibility of talks with the CDU, which came second on 18.8%. The SPD and Greens said the negotiations were paused to evaluate whether last week's agreement still stands and that they expect the Left to clarify whether it takes its commitments seriously.

The IMF lifted 2026 growth to 3.1 percent on AI investment even as grid operators from PJM to MISO declared emergencies during an October heat wave. New York Fed President Williams, meanwhile, sees no 2027 hikes; traders disagree.

Williams says Fed may not need rate hikes in 2027 New York Fed President John Williams said Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, in an interview with Bloomberg News, that the Fed may need one more rate hike this year but has no reason to think it would need to do more in 2027. His view is at odds with fed funds futures traders, who are largely betting on at least one increase in 2027 with about 90% odds, according to CME FedWatch data, and with eight of the 18 FOMC members who forecast a 2027 rate. The Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, and it meets at the end of October and again in December. Williams said he expects inflation to fall quite a bit in 2027, to near the Fed's 2% target, though energy prices continue to add upward pressure.

US grids strain as October heat collides with peak repair season Major US grid operators declared emergencies as a late-season heat wave pushed demand higher while about 60 gigawatts of capacity, roughly one-third of PJM's fleet, remained offline for maintenance. PJM, which serves 67 million people from the Mid-Atlantic to Chicago, urged plants to delay repairs, and MISO issued a maximum generation warning as temperatures rose more than 25F above normal, with Washington, DC nearing 90F by Wednesday. Spot prices at PJM's Western hub hit $1,021 a megawatt-hour, and day-ahead prices for Wednesday rose 28% to $295.83, the highest daily average since July 15. The crunch highlights how unpredictable fall weather and rising data center demand are shrinking the windows crews have to maintain aging plants and transmission lines, raising breakdown risks when power is needed most.

IMF lifts growth outlook on AI boom but warns of debt risks The International Monetary Fund raised its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1%, up from 3.0% in July, and lifted its UK forecast to 1.3% from 1%. The upgrade rests largely on heavy investment in artificial intelligence, even as the US-Israel war with Iran has disrupted Middle East energy supplies, pushed up oil prices and led central banks, including the Bank of England, to be expected to raise interest rates. The IMF slightly downgraded its UK growth forecast for 2027, saying high energy prices and elevated interest rates will weigh on consumer spending and business investment, and it raised its UK inflation estimate for next year to 2.8% from 2.4%. The fund projects UK inflation to average 3.3% this year and expects the UK to have the lowest annual borrowing in the G7 by 2031, though it warns the strength is fragile.

The real story today is trust: OpenAI used its own models to root out an employee accused of planting a bug in an executive conference room, while a UK hearing revealed frontier labs, OpenAI and Anthropic included, now asking governments to regulate them.

FBI arrests OpenAI employee accused of planting conference room bug FBI agents arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national who worked as an OpenAI product engineer, on charges of using a device to intercept oral communications after the company found a hidden recording device plugged into a TV's USB port in a San Francisco executive conference room. OpenAI says it discovered the encrypted device, installed around September 28 and covered in toilet paper, used its own AI models to identify the employee who planted it, and referred the matter to the FBI; Alfozan was fired and arrested October 9. OpenAI says there are no indications he accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data, but FBI director Kash Patel said the scheme was aimed at capturing sensitive communications about the company's superintelligence technology. Alfozan faces up to five years in prison if convicted, and the FBI's investigation is ongoing.

Apple unveils HomeView, its first smart display, at $299 Apple announced the HomeView, its first smart display, at an event in New York City, with preorders open and sales starting November 13. The 7-inch display costs $299 in speaker-base and wall-mounted versions, runs a curated app platform instead of iOS, and offers Watch-style customizable faces, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with on-device facial recognition, and support for up to six iCloud accounts. Setup requires an iPhone, with full Siri AI features limited to Apple Intelligence-capable models like the iPhone 15 Pro and newer. The launch marks Apple's entry into a smart display market long dominated by Google and Amazon and is part of a broader effort to revive its lagging smart home ecosystem, with its success largely hinging on the revamped Siri AI.

OpenAI and Anthropic urge UK lawmakers to impose binding AI rules Representatives for OpenAI and Anthropic told a British parliamentary committee on Tuesday that voluntary commitments are not enough and that AI safety should rest on binding law, with Anthropic's Liam Booth-Smith saying rules should be statutory and OpenAI's Tom Duff Gordon backing mandatory incident reporting. Google DeepMind and Meta declined to back new legislation, exposing a split among frontier firms, and civil servants conceded the UK regime, including the AI Security Institute's pre-release testing, is entirely voluntary. The hearing came as MI5 director Ken McCallum warned AI could change the stakes on bioweapons, and committee chair Liam Byrne said he wants Britain to use its G20 presidency to broker an international convention. The role reversal matters because the leading labs are the ones inviting binding oversight terms, while Anthropic disclosed that UK access to its latest model depended on US government approval.
