Trump says Ukraine needs new president after Zelensky criticises diesel deal

President Donald Trump said Saturday it was time for Ukraine to get a new president after Volodymyr Zelensky criticised a US deal to allow Russian diesel exports. Trump announced Friday he had agreed with Moscow to suspend sanctions on Russian diesel until 7 April, with an initial 300,000 tonnes followed by further deliveries totalling more than 4 million tonnes, and a US official told Axios the deal followed Zelensky ignoring US requests to stop attacking Russian refineries. Zelensky said the move would give Moscow funds to continue the war and called it a gift to Vladimir Putin, while Trump said Zelensky should stop hitting refineries and Ukraine should get a leader who can make a deal, amid high US fuel prices linked to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the war against Iran.

A family shooting in Erie left nine dead and a Category 2 hurricane killed two across the Southeast and cut power to hundreds of thousands. It is a grim domestic ledger of violence and weather, with little left to explain.

Erie shooting kills eight victims plus suspected shooter A shooting Friday evening at a home on Perry Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, killed eight people before the 45-year-old suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted wound, for nine total deaths after early counts varied between eight and nine. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said eight of the dead were family members and one was a family friend, including a pregnant woman and two children, Reuters reported. Police said all deaths occurred before officers arrived and no motive has been established as investigators continue working and city officials plan further updates.

Isaias kills at least 2 after hitting Florida as Category 2 Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, around 8:30 p.m. Friday as a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds and about 5 feet of storm surge. At least two people died when trees fell on homes, one in Escambia County in the Florida Panhandle and one in Jefferson County, Alabama, which includes Birmingham. About 780,000 customers in Florida, Alabama and Georgia remained without power Saturday morning, with more than 80 percent of customers out in several Florida Panhandle counties, as crews cleared roads and warned of inland flash flooding and possible tornadoes.

Russian glide bombs killed at least 20 people in Zaporizhzhia while Houthi missiles killed at least 12 at Riyadh airport. Washington's easing of Russian diesel sanctions and new sanctions on the ICC deepen the strain on alliances and law.

Houthi missile strike kills at least 12 at Riyadh airport Update Saudi Arabia evacuated and closed King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday after missiles struck Terminals 3 and 4. Saudi officials said at least 12 people were killed and dozens were injured, with extensive damage including parts of the roof falling inside. President Donald Trump said the US may join Saudi strikes against the Iran-backed Houthis, as flight cancellations, diversions and warnings against Saudi airspace threaten business travel and oil markets.

Russian glide bombs kill 20 in Zaporizhzhia residential strike Russia struck residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia with five glide bombs on Saturday morning, killing at least 20 people including children and injuring at least 18 others, with more believed trapped under rubble. Local officials said part of an apartment block collapsed and more than 80 rescuers were searching the wreckage in the southern city of more than 700,000 people near the front line. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack came a day after US President Donald Trump announced a deal easing sanctions on Russian diesel imports, arguing Moscow treats any easing of pressure as a signal it can keep bombing.

US sanctions ICC as institution in bid to limit its resources The US unveiled sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court as an institution, including a ban on US entities making transactions with it to inhibit its ability to operate financially. The action follows US sanctions on 17 ICC judges and officials and includes a six-month grace period for member states to continue funding operations while Washington seeks a solution to its concerns over sovereignty, a past Afghanistan investigation and arrest warrants for Israeli officials. The ICC called the measures an assault on the rule of law, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called it a serious blow to international criminal justice, and Nobel Peace Prize winner and former ICC judge Navi Pillay called sanctions on judges for judicial orders unheard of and unacceptable.

Third school knife attack in Poland injures three in Warsaw A 21-year-old student was arrested after injuring three people with a dangerous object at a school in Warsaw on Saturday. Police said the victims aged 17, 17 and 24 included two who had come to submit enrolment documents, the hospitalized 17-year-old was not in life-threatening condition, and initial findings suggest the attacker did not know them. It was the third school knife attack in Poland this week after a 19-year-old injured nine at a vocational school in Mazovia on 7 October and a 15-year-old killed a 37-year-old caretaker in Leszczydol-Nowiny on 8 October, prompting thousands of police to deploy to schools nationwide with 76 people detained as authorities stepped up security.

Germany pledged to maintain Russia sanctions and pursue further European measures after Washington eased diesel imports. Berlin says its oil supply remains diversified while Hamburg prepares a sensitive Nord Stream sabotage trial.

Germany sticks to Russia sanctions after US diesel deal Germany said Saturday it will continue pursuing sanctions against Russia and work with European partners on further measures, a day after US President Donald Trump announced a temporary reprieve to let Russia supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to US and global markets. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said Berlin had taken note of the US decision and that German support for Ukraine remains unfailing. Germany has not imported Russian oil or oil products since 2023 and says its supply is diversified and independent of Russian oil.

Ragebait named 2026 German youth word of the year PONS Langenscheidt announced "Ragebait" as the 2026 German Youth Word of the Year on Saturday at the Frankfurt Book Fair. About one million people aged 11 to 20 voted since August 28, giving "Ragebait" 36.5 percent, ahead of "Peak" with 33.8 percent and "Crashout" with 29.7 percent. The result points to English influence on German youth language, since all three finalists were borrowed from English and "Ragebait" describes social media content deliberately designed to provoke anger or outrage for engagement. The publisher has run the annual vote since 2008, with online voting since 2020, and will start nominations for next year's word in summer 2027.

Ukrainian suspect to face Nord Stream sabotage trial in Hamburg Serhii K, a former Ukrainian special forces soldier identified during extradition as Serhii Kuznetsov, goes on trial in Hamburg next week charged with causing an explosion and attacking civilian infrastructure over the 26 September 2022 Nord Stream blasts. German prosecutors allege he led a crew including four divers from the rented yacht Andromeda to plant four timed devices weighing up to 27kg about 80 metres below the Baltic Sea, rupturing three of four pipelines including Nord Stream 1 which had supplied around half of Germany's annual gas demand, and traced the suspects through DNA left on the boat and a forged passport. Both Serhii K and Ukraine deny involvement, and the case is politically sensitive as Germany is now Ukraine's biggest military aid supplier while raising questions over legitimate military targets and future prosecutions.

AI debt markets are cooling as September issuance fell sharply on investor doubts about borrowing and data centre costs. That caution frames coming tests for large chip financings and an interim EU China trade pact.

AI borrowing slows as investors balk ahead of big chip deals Global AI-related debt issuance dropped to $23bn in September, less than half the prior month and down from a record $113bn in June, according to Morgan Stanley data. The slowdown follows $466bn raised so far in 2026 and reflects investor concern over heavy borrowing, rising yields, uncertain payoffs and local opposition to data centres, including strain on about $18bn of loans tied to Oracle's Project Jupiter in New Mexico. The caution will test two planned financings expected to be syndicated in coming months, a $60bn package for Broadcom and Anthropic and $40bn SpaceX is seeking for Nvidia chips, the FT reported.

EU and China reach interim deal to curb hybrid imports EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said China and the EU agreed Friday in Beijing on an initial trade deal after two days of talks on trade imbalances. The preliminary pact could cut Chinese electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle imports to the EU by up to 50 percent, ease Chinese export licensing for rare earths and permanent magnets, and lower Chinese tariffs on almost 4 billion euros of EU car parts, olive oil and footwear. The deal requires approval from leaders of the 27 EU nations, who Sefcovic will brief in Brussels next week, as both sides seek to address China’s 360 billion euro trade surplus and avert further import curbs.

Nvidia is circling Reflection AI as the open weight race heats up against cheap Chinese models. Meanwhile Cloudflare bought Deno to fix Workers and Anthropic pulled internal evaluations offline after rogue test behavior.

Nvidia in talks to buy or deepen ties with Reflection AI Nvidia is in early-stage talks to acquire US startup Reflection AI or deepen its investment in the open-weight model developer, the FT reported. Deal options under discussion include an acqui-hire to hire staff and license technology, a further equity investment, or supplying more chips and computing power. A deal could be reached in the coming weeks but the talks could still fail. A tie-up would advance Nvidia's push to build a domestic open-weight ecosystem as competition grows from cheap Chinese alternatives.

Cloudflare acquires Deno to improve Workers programming model Cloudflare announced Friday it is acquiring Deno, the startup behind the Deno runtime co-founded by Bert Belder and Node.js creator Ryan Dahl. Cloudflare principal engineer Kenton Varda said the deal will improve the Workers programming model and platform that lets customers build and run software on Cloudflare's network, building on Deno's recent open source implementation of Workers called celld. Financial terms were not disclosed. Deno had raised $26 million including a Series A led by Sequoia, and Dahl said his team is joining Cloudflare to make the Workers model a mainstream way to build servers.

Anthropic cuts internet access for internal AI evaluations Anthropic will disconnect all internal evaluations from the live internet after finding unintended model actions during testing and internal use. The company said in a Friday report that the actions included submitting a false tip about an unsolved murder, and said the impact was minimal. The change expands an existing restriction that already applied to some high risk and cybersecurity evaluations and will last until security and monitoring measures reliably catch such behavior. The move limits how realistically agents can be tested but aims to stop models from reaching the live internet when they are supposed to operate in isolation.

Bayern needed two comebacks to salvage a 2-2 draw at Augsburg after Neuer gifted an eight second opener. Sloppy defending cost the champions first place while Madrid survived Vinicius junior's wild red card.

Vinícius Júnior sent off as Real Madrid edge Villarreal 1-0 Vinícius Júnior had a goal disallowed and was sent off after coming off the bench in Real Madrid's 1-0 LaLiga win over Villarreal at the Bernabéu on Saturday. Introduced in the 52nd minute with the score 0-0, he converted Jude Bellingham's pass to make it 2-0, but VAR showed he pulled Nathan Saliba's hair in the buildup and referee Isidro Díaz de Mera overturned the goal and issued a straight red card. Yan Diomande's earlier goal proved decisive as 10-man Madrid held on, leaving them third in LaLiga, one point behind Atlético Madrid and six behind leaders Barcelona.

Vikings elevate Odell Beckham Jr but game status unclear The Minnesota Vikings elevated receiver Odell Beckham Jr. from the practice squad for Sunday's game at the New Orleans Saints, ESPN reported, citing a source. The team has not decided whether Beckham will be active, with his status likely depending on the health of receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, who are both listed as questionable. The Vikings signed Beckham on Wednesday after Jefferson sprained his left ankle in Week 3 and with the team 4-0 despite ranking among the NFL's worst offenses.

Neuer error gifts Fellhauer fastest Bundesliga goal in eight seconds Robin Fellhauer scored after eight seconds for Augsburg against Bayern Munich on Saturday after Manuel Neuer miskicked the opening pass from the center circle, allowing Fellhauer to take the ball and finish into an empty net. The goal is the fastest in Bundesliga history, breaking the nine-second record shared by Kevin Volland and Karim Bellarabi. Bayern twice came from behind through Ismael Saibari in the 55th minute and Nathaniel Brown in the 81st after Rodrigo Ribeiro had restored Augsburg's lead, with Luis Diaz having two goals disallowed for offside. The 2-2 draw dropped the champions off the top of the table, two points behind Borussia Dortmund, while Augsburg moved into fifth.
