Oil hits five-month high as US-Iran tensions rattle markets

Brent crude rose above $114 a barrel on Friday, its highest since May, as traders weighed the prospect of renewed US-Israel attacks on Iran and escalating Middle East tensions. US West Texas Intermediate traded near $101, while global stocks came under pressure amid fears that higher energy prices and AI spending concerns could dent the economy. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said vessels had been struck in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, and its army chief said the military was prepared for asymmetric warfare. Saudi Aramco also evacuated its Dhahran headquarters after Houthi attacks, Reuters reported.

The final midterm sprint is a spending marathon: $1 billion in ads already booked and corruption the top issue, with Democrats trusted most on it.

Final midterm push sees record spending, corruption top concern With two weeks until Election Day, the parties are making last-ditch appeals backed by $1.4 billion in scheduled ads as control of Congress hangs in the balance. Filings show over $1 billion was spent in the first half of October, led by Senate Democrats' main super PAC at $109 million and President Trump's three super PACs at $103 million. A CNBC poll finds 36% of voters rank government corruption as the top issue, and Democrats hold an edge on handling it. Canadian officials face renewed questions about potential interference in the US election.

Peace talks around Ukraine are being tested by missiles over Kyiv, France's unrest is moving bond markets, and Brazil's runoff is threatening the Yanomami. It is a day of interconnected strains.

Ukraine says Starlink still restricted despite Trump's restoration pledge Ukraine's military said Friday that Starshield connections were still failing for drones flying faster than about 160 kilometers an hour, despite President Trump saying Elon Musk had restored the service. Zelensky's spokesman said nothing had changed, though some units near the Black Sea reported successful tests at 200 kilometers an hour on Thursday. SpaceX imposed the speed restrictions on October 14, and continued limits threaten Ukraine's medium-range drone strikes against Russian logistics and its ability to intercept Russian drones.

Russia pounds Kyiv with missiles even as US-brokered peace talks advance Russia hit Kyiv with 21 ballistic missiles in three waves just hours after Vladimir Putin agreed in principle to resume US-mediated talks, killing at least four people and wounding dozens across 12 regions. Moscow said its air defenses downed 808 Ukrainian drones aimed at Moscow and other cities. The overnight strikes underscore how far apart the sides remain despite a renewed diplomatic push led by US envoy Steve Witkoff, who met Putin in St. Petersburg; the US has proposed the UAE as a possible venue for talks expected to start after Nov. 10.

France's debt crisis and protests rattle eurozone markets France is facing its worst financial and social crisis in years after a weekend of nationwide riots, which left more than 2,500 people under arrest and thousands of businesses damaged. The unrest has pushed the country's 10-year bond yield above 5% for the first time since 2002 and widened the gap with German debt to levels unseen since the eurozone debt crisis. With France's debt at 119% of GDP and growth forecast cut to 0.5%, investors are asking whether the turmoil will spill into the wider bloc; analysts say stronger safeguards reduce but do not eliminate that risk. Further protests are planned for Oct. 24 and strikes for Nov. 5.

Bolsonaro's Amazon support threatens Indigenous groups ahead of Brazil runoff Flávio Bolsonaro won nearly 79% of the vote in Mucajaí, a Brazilian Amazon town that served as a hub for illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory, and led Roraima in the first round. Residents there back his pledge to legalize mining, while Indigenous leaders warn a second Bolsonaro presidency would be a lethal threat to the Yanomami. Lula's government has evicted miners and cut deforestation, but seven of nine Amazon states will have pro-Bolsonaro governors from January, and prospectors are already preparing to return.

UK quietly urges households to stockpile three days of supplies The UK government quietly published guidance telling households to stock enough supplies to be self-sufficient for three days in a national emergency. The online checklist recommends bottled water, non-perishable food, hand sanitizer, a torch and batteries, a radio, cash, copies of important documents, and warm clothing. Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the move brings the UK in line with European peers that already use a three-day message. The rollout, delayed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham over concerns it would mark a pessimistic start to his premiership, reflects heightened official worry about Russian hybrid attacks, AI-driven cyberwarfare, and severe weather.

Germany likely contracted in the third quarter as record-low Rhine levels choked shipments, and leaked AfD emails reveal a decade of seeking Trump allies. Budget pressure persists despite rising revenue.

Rhine low water cuts Germany's growth as business activity softens The German economy likely contracted in the third quarter as record-low water levels on the Rhine, caused by heatwaves and drought, hampered goods shipments, the Bundesbank said. The central bank said the recovery of Europe's largest economy was "interrupted," with the chemical sector and makers of coal and petroleum products hit particularly hard. Germany's statistics office will publish a first estimate of third-quarter growth on Friday, after the economy posted solid growth in the first half of the year. Germany still expects its fastest growth in years in 2026, helped by a public spending push on defense and infrastructure under Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Leaked emails show AfD's decade-long push to court Trump and MAGA allies A leaked trove of more than 420,000 AfD emails, documents, and personnel records shows the German far-right party's long-running efforts to cultivate Donald Trump and members of his MAGA movement. After Trump's 2016 election win, AfD leaders hurried to send a congratulatory telegram that included a request for US help removing the UN's 'enemy state' clause, and co-leader Alice Weidel later sought out and met former Trump adviser Steve Bannon. The AfD now leads German national polls at about 30% and is trying to form Germany's first far-right state government since World War II, while domestic intelligence monitors the party as a suspected extremist organization.

Germany sits out FIFA Under-15 World Cup as Russia returns Germany is among 22 nations that declined invitations to the inaugural FIFA Under-15 World Cup in Azerbaijan, which began this week with 189 teams and about 1,000 matches. The tournament also marks Russia's return to FIFA competition after being banned since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The German FA said it consciously decided not to participate, arguing that international competition at this age conflicts with its long-term youth development approach. Germany did not cite Russia's presence as the reason, but its refusal distances it from an event whose Russian participation has drawn criticism.

German tax revenue to rise in 2027, budget remains tight Germany expects tax revenue to rise by €4.1 billion in 2027, with the increase across federal, state and communal levels projected at over €10 billion and total tax payments reaching €1 trillion. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said the higher revenue would create no new fiscal leeway, and he called for continued consolidation to protect future budgets.

AI jitters are now a credit story: global corporate spreads hit a 17-month high, BASF pushed its Evonik offer past €11 billion, and Volvo's 27% plunge underscored China's squeeze on Western carmakers.

Global credit spreads hit 17-month high as AI spending fears roil markets AI-related investor anxiety spilled from tech stocks into credit markets, pushing global corporate bond yield premiums to their widest since May 2025, up to 129 basis points. Spreads on dollar bonds of higher-rated Asian companies widened to their highest levels since July 2025, and Export-Import Bank of Korea postponed a yen bond sale. Analysts described the move as the beginning of a sustained repricing of credit risk, as investors sought safe havens amid the AI selloff and geopolitical tensions.

BASF raises bid for Evonik to over €11 billion BASF has raised its takeover offer for Evonik to more than €11 billion, proposing about €24 a share after an earlier bid valued the German chemicals group at roughly €10.3 billion. The revised offer includes job and production-site guarantees, with Evonik's Essen headquarters remaining important. Evonik's largest shareholder, RAG-Stiftung, is key to any deal, and deliberations are ongoing with no certainty of a transaction. BASF says combining would help both companies gain scale and compete with Chinese rivals as Europe's chemicals industry faces weak demand and oversupply.

Volvo shares plunge 27% as China sales slump accelerates Volvo Cars shares plunged 27% after the company posted a third-quarter operating loss of 5.6 billion Swedish kronor and said China revenue fell almost 50% year-on-year. CEO Håkan Samuelsson said the slump came 'faster than we thought,' with Chinese consumers now choosing stronger domestic alternatives. Volvo said it will cut 2,500 jobs and 5 billion Swedish kronor in costs as it shifts to a more regional strategy, including sharing platforms with parent Geely and developing software in China. The loss shows how intensifying competition from Chinese automakers is squeezing Western brands.

AI is settling into boring utility: Linux maintainers accept it as a tool, a personalized mRNA vaccine cut melanoma risk by 42%, and NASA needs 22 Starship launches for the Moon.

Torvalds backs AI for competent kernel developers, rejects drive-by patches Linus Torvalds defended using AI as a tool in Linux kernel development, saying competent developers should use it while "clueless" users who submit unsolicited patches should be discouraged. At the Linux Kernel Maintainers Summit in Prague, maintainers decided to deprecate the Assisted-by Tag, so code submissions no longer need to say whether AI was used. Torvalds said AI-generated code must still be understood by its author, and that the real problems are issues exposed by AI, not AI itself. Kernel maintainers also report that AI is producing more genuine bug reports, though the added volume is straining already overworked maintainers.

Moderna and Merck mRNA vaccine cuts melanoma death and recurrence by 42% Moderna and Merck announced their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine combined with Keytruda cut the risk of melanoma recurrence or death by 42% in a Phase 3 trial. Among 1,137 patients with surgically removed stage IIB-IV melanoma, 82% of those on the vaccine combination were alive without recurrence after two years, versus 70% receiving Keytruda alone. The results, scheduled for presentation at the European Society of Medical Oncology meeting in Madrid, are the first late-stage evidence of an mRNA vaccine improving outcomes over standard-of-care immunotherapy. The companies are discussing approval with regulators.

Artemis Moon landing would require 22 Starship launches NASA's Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel estimated that fueling a Starship-based lunar lander for Artemis IV would require about 22 Starship launches. The estimate emerged at the panel's quarterly meeting, where former astronaut Charlie Precourt cited it as a risk to mission success. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk called the estimate too high, saying the actual number will be 6 to 8. At a twice-weekly launch rate, 22 flights would take about three months to prepare, complicating NASA's goal of a human Moon landing in 2028.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's NBA-record 141-game 20-point streak ended, but the Thunder still beat Denver 96-84. He missed all seven first-half shots, and the real headline is how little it mattered.

Gilgeous-Alexander's record 20-point streak ends in Thunder win over Nuggets Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 17 points in the Oklahoma City Thunder's 96-84 home win over the Denver Nuggets, snapping his NBA-record streak of 141 consecutive 20-point regular-season games. He missed all seven shots in the first half and asked coach Mark Daigneault to sub him out with 1:43 left and the Thunder ahead 93-76. It was his first game under 20 points since Oct. 30, 2024, and the win showed the Thunder could succeed without his usual scoring output.
