Oil nears $108 as Hormuz talks stall and Fed raises rates
Brent crude climbed more than 3 percent to near $108 a barrel on Sept. 27 after ceasefire talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz stalled, with Iran sticking to a proposal President Donald Trump rejected. Saudi Arabia was said to have resumed exports through a repaired cross-country pipeline after drone strikes earlier in September, Bloomberg reported, while tight supply pushed Brent's prompt spread above $7 a barrel from less than $1 a month earlier. The Federal Reserve raised short-term borrowing costs by 0.25 percentage points under Chair Kevin Warsh to confront consumer price pressures, and 10-year Treasury yields fell the day after the decision. Trump expects negotiations with Iran to resume this week and the European Union warned members to consider demand cuts and gas storage measures ahead of winter.
