Alberta voters reject renewed independence referendum in Canada
Alberta voters in an Oct. 19 referendum rejected a legal process that could lead to another independence vote, with 76% of counted ballots favoring remaining in Canada and 23% favoring a second referendum, preliminary results showed. The oil-rich province saw high turnout, including about 1.3 million people voting early or by mail, while final results were expected to take several days. The outcome was welcomed by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith, eased business concerns ahead of major energy investment, and left separatists without a clear path to put independence to another vote.
