Navi Pillay wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for international law work
Navi Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her work to advance international law and the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The South African jurist in her mid-80s is a former judge on South Africa's High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and defended Nelson Mandela and allies during apartheid. Norwegian Nobel Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes said she showed exceptional courage and integrity toward a more comprehensive global legal order and that peace requires justice, while President Trump, who has openly sought the prize and sanctioned the ICC, did not win.
