Former German spy chief arrested on treason suspicion
Germany's federal prosecutor arrested former BND president August Hanning on Tuesday on suspicion of treason, espionage and disclosure of state secrets. Prosecutors allege Hanning agreed in spring 2010 to pay his former chief of staff Manfred D, who was also arrested, for intelligence from inside the Federal Intelligence Service, receiving about 2,000 documents including classified executive briefings for use in private consulting and drafting at least one analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligence service. The case is the highest profile treason allegation since the 1974 Guillaume affair and threatens confidence among BND partners as Chancellor Friedrich Merz seeks expanded intelligence powers, and Russia was not currently part of the investigation, the FT reported.
